Questions to ask when looking at advanced classes◦ What are my student’s abilities ◦ What are my students strong interests/passions? ◦ How much time will they have for homework? ◦ Poor grades and poor course planning may limit the options available to your student after high school Types of advanced courses available to your student ◦ Honors ◦ Advanced Placement (AP) ◦ Concurrent Credit ◦ Career & Technical (CTE) ◦ International Baccalaureate (IB)

Honors Courses §These courses are offered to grades 9 -12 §Have accelerated pace and

Advanced Placement Courses (AP) §AP follows a nationally standardized rigorous curriculum developed by The

Advanced Placement Courses (AP) §AP follows a nationally standardized rigorous curriculum developed by The College Board §Typically taken in the 11 th or 12 th grade year §Students perform in the top 2% nationally §GPA’s are weighted and calculated accordingly §The end product of the AP course is the AP exam (AP grade scale ranges from 5 -1). §Credits are awarded by various colleges and universities according to the score received on the final AP exam (most often awarded with a 3, 4 or 5 on exam) §The fee for the AP exam could be covered by Fast Forward Program

College-level undergraduate courses taken on the high school campus Typically taken in the 11

College-level undergraduate courses taken on the high school campus Typically taken in the 11 th or 12 th grade year Students are required to complete college level assignments outside of class time Courses are taught on a level comparable to a freshman college course Concurrent Credit Courses The concurrent course must meet the requirements of the state, district and institution Unlike AP courses, students earn the number of college credits for which they are enrolled in The grade earned is the grade posted to the college transcript Not weighted unless designated as AP Current cost of concurrent credit is $75 and could be covered by the Fast Forward program. Most college courses are 3 -4 credits. When determining if concurrent credit will transfer to other colleges, it is always best to check with the colleges of interest

International Baccalaureate (IB) Courses §Two-year courses taken Junior and Senior years §Students study their subjects analytically and critically in considerable depth §Courses are not weighted unless designated at a higher level HL course, HL course is on a weighted scale §IB course require both internal and external assessments §Colleges and Universities offer advanced standing and/or credits for many IB courses §IB courses are only at Renaissance High School §Attend RHS breakout for more detailed information!

www. westada. org/fastforward Funded by Idaho Legislature Idaho’s Fast Forward Program Provides every student attending an Idaho public school an allocation of $4, 125 to use towards advanced opportunities All public high school students in Idaho are eligible for state aid to pay for concurrent credit, advanced placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Career and Technical Education. To qualify, the parent must complete a Fast Forward Participation form and an account must be created on the Idaho State Department of Education website There are some factors that could deny a student’s funds such as failing a class or exam, not having the correct forms completed, or not being enrolled at the college, etc.
