Planners and Binders • The AVID Binder and Planner are a very important part of our day! • Binders come to school EVERY DAY. • Please check them periodically for information. • It is great for you to help your child stay organized, but please do not clean out your child's Binder without them. • The “Setting Up My Binder” sheet lists how the binder should be organized along with “everyday supplies” that are supposed to be in the pencil pouch at all times. • If a student continuously does not have his/her supplies, we will load them up on Red Bull and send a puppy home with him/her.

SPOT/Advisory (Students Performing On Target) SPOT is a time for *students who need additional support – they will receive interventions on their level for individual needs *students who need extension – they are able to work independently and in groups on Think Tanks or activities that extend learning in core subjects.

Tardies • Students have a quick passing period between classes to go to lockers and to the restroom. • Students not in class when the teacher begins the lesson may obtain a tardy. • Tardies can result in a 2 hour detention after school.

Pre AP vs. Academic = a general education curriculum that covers all TEKS, Student Expectations, prepares students for the STARR exam, and involves interventions when needed Pre AP* = includes all of the above plus a more rigorous curriculum that expects a deeper understanding of text, demands thorough, open-ended answers, and much higher expectations of reading and writing *Pre AP is NOT for everyone. It is a good idea to switch during the first few weeks of school should a student find himself struggling with the more rigorous curriculum or needing a more challenging one. You should contact your child’s teacher if there is a question regarding placement.

Language Arts Mrs. Ivory and Mrs. Doerge Students use a flexible range of metacognitive reading skills in both assigned and independent reading to understand an author’s message. Students will become self-directed, critical readers who: • Establish purposes for reading text • Ask literal, interpretive, evaluative, and universal questions of text • Monitor and adjust comprehension by using background knowledge, creating sensory images, re-reading, asking questions, etc. • Make inferences about text and use textual evidence to support understanding • Summarize and paraphrase texts in ways that maintain meaning and logical order within texts • Make connections between multiple texts of various genres and provide textual evidence Classroom texts will consist of novels, textbook, interactive notebooks, and selected books/novels from the library.

Science In fifth grade Science, our main objective is to prepare for the Science STAAR test that the students will be taking at the end of the year. Science involves hands on engaging activities, vocabulary instruction, and classroom investigations using safe practices and proper tools, as well as discovery through inquiry. Topics covered are • Matter & Energy • Force & Motion • Earth Resources • Cycles • Organisms & their Environment.

Social Studies In 5 th grade, students receive an overview of American History from

Social Studies In 5 th grade, students receive an overview of American History from early explorers through present day. The focus: • How America began • The causes and effects of the Revolutionary War • The story of the Civil War • How those events relate to who we are today. Students are not STAAR tested in Social Studies until 8 th grade. We will assign minimal homework in SS.
