School Cell Phone Policy • I am SICK of this being ignored! • It is the SCHOOL policy that ALL phones should be placed in the holders on the walls for the duration of every class. • When you come in, turn OFF your phone and put it in the pocket that matches the number on your desk!!! DO NOT retrieve your phone until AFTER the bell rings and you are on your way OUT the door! • If I hear or see a phone, or if I notice that there are not enough cell phones in the holder, I WILL conduct a cell phone check and everyone who failed to put their phones in the proper place WILL lose TEN points! Everyone who did as they are instructed will EARN ten points.

Remember, if your WHOLE group completes their Achieves for weeks 1 -4 you DO NOT have to do them during week 5 and I will give you 10 s anyway! • KNOW YOUR GROUP MEMBERS !!! If I ask you who is in your group, I better not hear, “That kid over there. ” WORK TOGETHER! • At least one class WILL get 100% this quarter!!! That is the goal!

PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINARY PLAN The objective of this plan is to ensure there is consistency

PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINARY PLAN The objective of this plan is to ensure there is consistency in our school-wide disciplinary procedures. Every teacher is held accountable to the stipulations outlined by this plan. We at Somerset believe when students are engaged in the curriculum, the learning environment is enhanced. Our teachers must be prepared to teach and engage their students in the process of higher order and critical thinking skills. The following are unacceptable behaviors leading to disciplinary action which include verbal warnings (but are not limited to) and will lead to other consequences if habitual: • 1. Classroom tardiness • 2. Lying • 3. Acting in a manner that interferes with the educational process • 4. Failure to carry out directions • 5. Failure to comply with the dress code • 6. Gum chewing • 7. Excessive talking • 8. Use of any electronic device(s)

CLASSROOM CONSEQUENCE(S): • 1 st Consequence - verbal warning should be issued to student.

CLASSROOM CONSEQUENCE(S): • 1 st Consequence - verbal warning should be issued to student. • 2 nd Consequence - parent contact established and logged in the parent contact log. • 3 rd Consequence - mandatory detention will be given to the student by the teacher. The teacher will be responsible for supervising the detention with the student. Please note that parent(s) of the offender must be informed 24 hours prior to serving the detention. The teacher must document the method of parent notification whether it was done via email, letter/detention form, or phone call on your parent contact log. • 4 th Consequence (Administrative Consequence) - depending on the severity of the infraction, the student will serve a 1 hour Administrative Detention or a 3 hour Saturday School Detention closely supervised by the Detention Coordinator. Administrative Detentions will be conducted once a week on Tuesdays and Saturday School Detentions will be from 8 am-11 am. • 5 th Consequence - All previous parental communication established by the teacher and administrative referrals will be considered for further disciplinary action. The student will serve a mandatory Internal Suspension (ISS), days determined by administration. In this case the Palm Beach County Discipline Matrix outlines the consequence of the infraction as more severe than a 3 day indoor suspension, Somerset Canyons’ Administration will at least match the number of either indoor or outdoor suspension days the county assigns. The Assistant Principal will make parent contact via phone to discuss disciplinary status of the student. Should the parents disagree with the consequences outlined by the Assistant Principal, a parent has the right to request a conference to be held with the Principal, the Assistant Principal, the teacher who issued the referral, and the student referred. • 6 th Consequence - the student will be given Outdoor Suspension. Please note, profanity towards a staff member or authority, defiance, skipping, or fighting will result in immediate outdoor suspension from school. • -A student may not attend school or any extra-curricular activity on the day(s) he or she is assigned to Internal Suspension or Outdoor Suspension. • -A student will be permitted to make-up all assignments he/she missed during the assigned days of Outdoor Suspension. It is the responsibility of the student to get all work missed from their teachers.

English I- Short Story Project * This quarter we will be starting our Short Story project in earnest! You will have THREE drafts due this quarter and each one will be a TEST GRADE! If you fail to turn in a draft, you WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR A TEST GRADE!!! * On the days when a draft is due we will be doing a peer editing activity. If you DON’T have a draft you WILL NOT be able to participate, so you will LOSE your conduct points AND receive a lunch detention, during which you will complete the assignment! If you don’t, you will get a ZERO for the test grade! * Remember to SAVE your draft each time you work on it! Every time you turn one in it will be edited by other students or myself, so all you’ll have to do is return to your document and make the changes. DON’T MAKE MORE WORK FOR YOURSELF! You’re not rewriting your story for each draft- you’re IMPROVING it.

English I- Short Story Project. Requirements • Completion: Each draft must be a COMPLETE story, NOT pieces of a story. • Elements: You must include ALL the elements of a short story that we have discussed in class- setting, characterization, conflict, rising action, climax, resolution, theme, and point of view. Your first draft will be graded by your peers using a checklist and if you do not have all these elements you will lose points. • Clarity: Your story must make SENSE! Please have friends or family members read it first so they can let you know if it needs work or not! • Format: Your story must be TYPED, DOUBLE-SPACED, in Times New Roman 12 point font. Your document must have 1 inch margins. Note“double spaced” does NOT mean hitting the space bar twice or hitting enter twice after each paragraph! Make sure your story has multiple paragraphs and INDENT each new one! • Grammar/ Spelling: Spell check your story! Look for grammatical errors, especially changes in tense!!! Pick a tense and STICK WITH IT! Use

English 1 - Short Story Project Requirements • Portfolio: Since you will need to take your edited drafts home, each student must have a folder where they will keep all assignments associated with this project. You will need to turn this in each time a draft is due, INCLUDING ALL PREVIOUS DRAFTS! You will be graded based on each draft’s improvements, and if I can’t compare one draft to another you will receive a VERY LOW GRADE!!! Make sure your portfolios are LABLED with your name and class period on the front. • Dialogue format: We have learned about formatting dialogue and will continue to work more on it, but remember, each time a new person speaks you must start a NEW paragraph and INDENT by hitting the TAB key , NOT the space bar! Look for dialogue in ANY book if you are having trouble, or come see me! I will help you!!!

AICE EGP Notes : The reason I’m having you print the notes as opposed

AICE EGP Notes : The reason I’m having you print the notes as opposed to WRITING them is to save time and progress through the material more quickly. If all you’re doing is printing the notes but not taking and additional notes ON the power points, YOU WILL RECEIVE ZEROS! You are to INTERACT with the notes, not JUST underline or highlight a word or sentence here and there! You are to write down the information I give VERBALLY during class! I will try to give more verbal cues, but it is up to you to pay attention and take notes! From now on, the night before we are to go over a lesson, I want you to print and READ the Power. Points, annotating as you do so. This way you will have previewed the material and will be able to write down any questions you have about the information we’ll be discussing.

AICE EGP Academic Vocabulary- It is important that you use impressive vocabulary in your

AICE EGP Academic Vocabulary- It is important that you use impressive vocabulary in your essays. It makes you sound more mature, it impresses the examiners, and it raises the level of formality. Each class I will give you one or two academic vocabulary words that you will need to write in your binders (keep a titled list in your notes section). You will need to write the definition and a sentence with each word using context. I will give you a topic. For example, if the word is “consensus” (noun-general agreement in opinions, values, and the like) and the topic is gun control, you might write a sentence like this: “It is doubtful that the American people will ever come to an amiable consensus regarding gun reform, but perhaps there may be a nd Amendment right compromise that enables citizens to keep their 2 yet still ensures the safety of school children. ” We will have vocabulary quizzes on these words.

AICE EGP- Upcoming- Timed Practice During quarter 2 we will continue to work on

AICE EGP- Upcoming- Timed Practice During quarter 2 we will continue to work on essay writing. You will do your first timed essay practice, during which you will be able to use your binders to help you. The night before the timed practice, REVIEW YOUR NOTES in your binders so you know where everything is and you don’t waste time flipping through looking for specific notes. If you are missing notes, GET THEM BEFORE HAND! You will be peer-editing these essays using a checklist and form ! You will each grade ONE essay CAREFULLY, identifying particular aspects like thesis statement, topic sentences, examples/evidence, links from claim/point to evidence, and transitions. For additional essays you will be reading and giving commentary. We will go over peer editing strategies prior to the timed essay practice so you will know how you will be graded.
