Welcome to Quarter 2!

Do Now #1: Quarter 1 Reflection Looking back at the first quarter, reflect upon

Do Now #1: Quarter 1 Reflection Looking back at the first quarter, reflect upon your experience. Are you proud of how you did in this and other classes? Did you put enough effort into your school work or did you do the bare minimum, or even less? If you’re a freshman, how has the first quarter of high school differed from your expectations? What have you learned so far? What would you change, and what are your goals for the second quarter? Reflect on the first quarter in AT LEAST FIVE COMPLETE SENTENCES (English)/ TEN COMPLETE SENTENCES (AICE). Use proper capitalization and punctuation and avoid Words of Death!!!

Quarter 2 Expectations That is the TITLE of these notes! WRITE IT DOWN AND

Quarter 2 Expectations That is the TITLE of these notes! WRITE IT DOWN AND DATE YOUR NOTES!!! No date, no title, NO POINTS!!!!

Ask Three and Then Me This is high school. You need to start showing

Ask Three and Then Me This is high school. You need to start showing a little more independence and selfreliance. BEFORE coming to me or emailing me or messaging me on Remind about things that we have discussed in class, ask yourself if there is anywhere else you could find that information. Check THREE sources BEFORE asking me. Ask a classmate, check the school website, ask a friend. I should NOT be getting messages on Remind about dress code or what day it is the next day. This information is NOT my responsibility, and can be found on the school website. I also reserve the right to ignore your Remind message if it’s something asinine.

Incomplete Notes When I give you notes to take, you DO NOT get to

Incomplete Notes When I give you notes to take, you DO NOT get to pick and choose what information you want to write down and what you don’t. I have said many times, you don’t have to write every WORD, but you DO have to write down ALL THE INFORMATION that I am giving you!!! If your notes are incomplete, I will no longer give ANY credit. “Incomplete” is a ZERO. If your notes are missing the title or date, that is ALSO incomplete, and will be a ZERO.

No Red Ink We HAVE to do something about your grammar. It is VERY

No Red Ink We HAVE to do something about your grammar. It is VERY sad that so many high school students don’t seem to know the difference between there/their/they’re and other homophones. You are going to start having weekly assignments on No. Redink. com in order to improve your grammar and writing in general. I will give you more information about this later on. Remember, Words of Death cost you POINTS in Do Nows and anything else you turn in (except notes).

Commonlit assignments are 15% of your grade in this class. If you haven’t been

Commonlit assignments are 15% of your grade in this class. If you haven’t been doing them, you’re actively tanking your own grade. You only have FOUR assignments per quarter!!! It’s not that bad! Get it done and follow the requirements for the short response questions!! Answers MUST be AT LEAST THREE SENTENCES!!! You must ANSWER the question, provide a quote from the text that supports your answer, and elaborate/ explain why that quote matters!! We will be looking at examples of good responses so you can get an better idea of what I’m looking for. USE THE CHEAT SHEET I SEND OUT FOR HELP!!!!

Seating Charts New seating charts will be implemented this quarter and they WILL BE

Seating Charts New seating charts will be implemented this quarter and they WILL BE FOLLOWED. You guys think you’re clever, and think I don’t notice when you change seats, but I DO, and I try to give you a chance. However, for the most part, you have blown it. You must sit in your ASSIGNED SEAT each day and put your phone in the MATCHING number. I will be replacing any missing numbers on your desks.

Lit Circles (English Classes ONLY) As you read your book, you MUST take notes

Lit Circles (English Classes ONLY) As you read your book, you MUST take notes on post-its. This will be your weekly homework grade. Take notes on: Main Events Characters (who they are, what their relationship is to the narrator) Connections you make (text-to-text/self/world) New Words AND definitions (AT LEAST three a week) Themes and symbols you notice in your book We will go over this in more detail later on, and discuss your lit circle group assignments. If you’re doing reading logs, you do not have to take these notes, but it would be a good idea since they will help you with your project at the end of the quarter.

Input/Output (CNN 10) (AICE only) We really need to practice this since almost ALL

Input/Output (CNN 10) (AICE only) We really need to practice this since almost ALL the CNN 10 s I saw when I graded binders were ALL input. You NEED to learn the difference. What you are supposed to do for output is write YOUR RESPONSE to the news story, NOT a summary of it!!! Make connections! What were your thoughts when you watched it? Did it remind you of anything else? Does it make you question anything? You need to have an OPINION!!! Words of Death will cost you points, as will informal language! These are minibody paragraphs so avoid “I” and “you. ”
