WHY study Quantitative (Research) Methods? WHAT‘s it about ? MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen
Why?
Contents n Introduction(s) n Quantitative Research Methods n Lecturer n Students MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen
Learning Targets n Quantitative Methods – Dealing with data – Theoretical models – Practical experience (in Excel and SPSS) Ø Helpful tools for your daily work n Academic Research – structure and format of academic work – (Literature sources)
“The Business Research Process” Cooper / Schindler
Learning Targets: Content n “Quantitative Methods” enables students to analyze data and apply statistical analyses. Topics include: n Presentation and interpretation of descriptive measures, n applications of probability and the normal distribution in order to be able to properly apply confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing. n The students shall be able to use simple and multiple regression models as well as time series analysis to applied cases from Economics and Business. MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen
Learning Outcomes n After completion of this module students will have essentially improved their individual communication skills, self-confidence and effectiveness in rhetoric activities and are able to professionally apply presentation, moderation and negotiation techniques. n Students will be also able to apply statistical tools and concepts needed in business applications and can use modeling as an aid to managerial decision making MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen

How do we learn ? … u Listening u Watching u Writing u Thinking u … interactive (team) work? -> after each class (incl. lunch break): - 3 most important things I learned today - (up to 3) questions Students are selcted at random at the beginning of the next class
Assessment… u The assessment is a LEARNING PORTFOLIO. This is a type of assessment in which the students document their own responsibility for their learning process and learning outcome. u Assessment - Required parts of the Learning Portfolio in this class are described in this document - they might be subject to change / discussion during the semester.
Teamwork n 5 Teams – working together for the module n (Mixed gender / nationalities) Tasks: n Teamwork in class n Homework (teams) n Case study (multiple regression with own data): presentations + handout MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen

Correlations and Causality
Correlations and Causality
Correlations and Causality n The more firemen fighting a fire, the bigger the fire is observed to be. => Therefore firemen cause fire. n Sleeping with one's shoes on is strongly correlated with waking up with a headache. => Therefore, sleeping with one's shoes on causes headache. (source: http: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation)
Correlations and Causality n As ice cream sales increase, the rate of drowning deaths increases sharply. => Ice cream causes drowning. n With a decrease in the number of pirates, there has been an increase in global warming over the same period. => Therefore, global warming is caused by a lack of pirates.
