Preparing for school Starting school is an exciting but sometimes anxious time. You can support your child by practising: • dressing independently - practise zips, buttons etc • putting on shoes - laces can be really tricky, Velcro is much easier for little hands. • eating independently e. g. using a knife and fork, opening their lunchbox as well as being able to open the things inside e. g. wrappers etc • You could also look at items on our school website together or take a walk to the school. https: //dalmenyprimaryschool. wordpress. com

Getting to school The best way to come to school is by walking, biking or scooting. There are some bike racks available in the front playground. If you need to drive, we kindly ask parents not to park in the carpark or block residents’ drives.

Indoor and Outdoor Shoes We operate an indoor/outdoor shoe system. Children change their shoes when they enter their classroom in the morning and change into outdoor shoes before they go into the playground at playtime, lunchtime and home time. Please remember to label shoes with your child’s name. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC

School bag Children in Primary 1 need a school bag big enough to hold

School bag Children in Primary 1 need a school bag big enough to hold their reading book, water bottle, snack and their packed lunch (if they do not have school dinners). In order to maximise space in the classroom, children hang their bags on a hook in the corridor at the start of the day and collect it at the end of the day. Your child does not require a pencil case as the school provides any pencils that they need but please provide a labelled water bottle each day as children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day. Juice is not permitted in the classroom.

Labelling Absolutely EVERYTHING should be clearly labelled with your child's name before starting school.

Labelling Absolutely EVERYTHING should be clearly labelled with your child's name before starting school. Items can go astray, especially when they are getting changed for PE. It is more likely you will find missing items in the Lost Property box if you have labelled them.

Break times Children should bring a small healthy snack for playtime e. g. a piece of fruit or something with a wrapper that is easy for your child to open. Children eat their snack in the playground so please remember that things like yoghurts that require a spoon can be awkward for them. Morning break is from 10. 30 -10. 45. The P 1 children have lunch from 12. 10 -1. 10.

Lunch All children in P 1 -P 3 are entitled to free school lunches.

Lunch All children in P 1 -P 3 are entitled to free school lunches. However, in order for the kitchen to prepare enough meals, parents are required to order lunches in advance using our Parent Pay system. More information about Parent Pay will follow. Children are welcome to bring a packed lunch from home if they prefer or they can do a combination of school lunches and home packed lunches. As school finishes at lunchtime on Friday the school lunch option is a sandwich, yoghurt, a piece of fruit and water. The children bring this home with them.
