q About ORCA VT ORCA Education uses Microsoft Agent Families Care For Children q q technology helped by ORCA. VT animation to create these interactive presentations When you installed this product the additional files needed would normally automatically have been installed If the presentations do not work with character animation and sound then ensure that all the files are installed correctly. You will find the files in you ORCA Education folder Consult your read me documentation for extra help Peedy is one virtual teaching assistant who we use to add a lighter touch when giving extra information on some slides If you click on his icon at the bottom you will see an example of his style but also see if your files are installed correctly. If you right click on the animation while he is talking you can choose suspend to stop him. Click resume to start him again. Or click hide to stop him entirely q q q q This elephant family works together to raise and protect their young Human babies and children remain dependent on their parents for longer than any other species One important role of the family is to look after children What do children need? © ORCA Education Limited 2004 and suppliers all rights reserved
q q What do they do? On each slide the character will only appear if you choose to use him or her by clicking on the button The text on the button gives you an idea of the nature of their help Pregnancy Screening Tests q q q The ultrasound scan gives pictures of the foetus in the uterus and is routine, although this can show an abnormality The Down’s syndrome screening test is available at about 15 weeks If the test shows the mother is high risk, she can then have an amniocentesis, although there is a risk of miscarriage The CVS (chorionic villus sampling) test can also detect Down’s syndrome but this can be done much earlier than the amniocentesis there is again a risk of miscarriage The AFT (Alphafetoprotein) test is for screening spina bifida q q q q What should a mother consider before having these tests? Remember these presentations are designed to introduce and illustrate topics They have less space than a text book to give detailed information. The ORCA. VT characters however are able to give extra guidance and detail It is very important to preview the presentation to find out what each slide character has to offer and whether the content is appropriate to the class These Child development slides are designed for GCSE students Sometimes (as with the thumbnail slide in the corner) a question may be set for the class The VT character here will provide an answer but in this case will also provide extra information for which the slides do not have room Click on the icon in the corner of the thumbnail to see this extra information © ORCA Education Limited 2004 and suppliers all rights reserved
Making. Change s q q q q The Mother’s Health q One reason why you purchased this q product was to be able to adapt a ready made product to your student’s needs Before you start you may want to make a q copy of the Power. Point file q To change the text boxes choose view and q then normal and now you will have a slide to amend. Insert your cursor and retype q Be careful if you change graphics because some slides are complex The mother needs to look after herself as well as the new baby At 6 weeks after the birth she will have a post-natal examination to check her health and whether the uterus has gone back to its normal size She may be feeling very tired from caring for the baby day and night. She may have the “baby blues” from tiredness and hormone changes Sometimes women will get post natal depression which can be a long term problem Why is it important that the whole family is aware of these problems? To print for OHP choose File, then Print, on print what, choose slides You can change what the VT characters say. We have put some of the simpler visual basic scripting on the notes page (go to View, then Notes Page) you can try changing what they say. Do not change the visual basic symbols as they are providing instructions to the computer You may find that a particular character is not clear on your computer in which case by going to the notes page you can change the first instruction line to use a new character e. g. change SHOW susan, susan. acs, 80, 68 to SHOW tom, tom. acs, 80, 68 when you next click on the icon Tom will deliver the script instead of Susan © ORCA Education Limited 2004 and suppliers all rights reserved
Tips q q q q q If you have a low specification computer you may find that the slides are slow to load Normally Power. Point loads everything it needs when you first start the programme Removing some of the large high quality animations can help if an individual slide is slow to load or if the VT character has long pauses The Home Environment and the Child The home environment is the ideal place to provide opportunities and facilities for the development of the child. What should it provide? Space to play with toys and where mess can be easily cleaned from floors and furniture The child’s”own” place. A bedroom or part of a room where the child can store his or her things Space to display work, pictures and posters A place to invite friends A chance to get together as a family e. g. for a meal and have parents to spend time with the child A place for praise and encouragement Somewhere to help and feel valued q q q q q Can you think of more and why are these things important? To keep the slide in a logical sequence you should call up the VT character after the bullet points. If you run on to the next slide just click the left arrow on your keyboard and this will take you back Be selective how you use the VT characters. If you use all the features including class discussion you may well overrun the lesson You can of course split the presentations or even just use a particular slide To choose just one slide start the presentation then type the slide number and press enter The text in the speech bubbles is designed for students on private study using a stand alone computer and may be too small from the back of the class Make sure you have connected the sound cable to your projector © ORCA Education Limited 2004 and suppliers all rights reserved
q q q Other Features This slide is adapted from one of our English presentations. On some slides you will see word or sound icons to provide extra resources The word files are set up for printing and the font is too small for the projection, although you can of course increase the font size when you call up the word file. You might want to print out these sheets and copies of slides as notes before the lesson For some subjects there are ORCA Homeworks and Revise & Test products available that compliment these presentations Remember the presentations are designed to be flexible you could The Donkey by G. K adapt and save several copies for Chesterton the needs of different classes All presentations conclude with the When fishes flew and forests walked vocabulary slide and a teacher task And figs grew upon thorn, Some moment when the moon was blood The teacher task is an example and Then surely I was born. you may well want to insert your own to fit in with your lesson plans © ORCA Education Limited 2004 and suppliers all rights reserved
