Welcome to Penn State Altoona An Introduction to The Criminal Justice Program Part Two

The CJ Program There are three degrees to explore: n n n Associate Degree of Science in Criminal Justice (64 credits) Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice (128 credits) Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice (128 credits)

The CJ Program n All Criminal Justice degrees begin with a list of general education requirements followed by prescribed courses for the major of criminal justice.

Associate Degree General Education Requirements: n Writing/Speaking (GWS) – 3 credits n Quantification (GQ) – 3 credits n Natural Science (GN) – 3 credits n Arts (GA) – 3 credits n Humanities (GH) – 3 credits n Social Sciences (GS) – 3 credits n One additional general education course from any of the above categories – 3 credits

Associate Degree Other University-Wide Requirements n United States Cultures (US) or International Cultures (IL) – 3 credits of either one (courses which fulfill either US or IL requirements have a USI designation) n Writing Across the Curriculum (any course with a W suffix – PHIL 103 W is recommended if it is offered) – 3 credits

Associate Degree Requirements for the Major – a grade of “C” or better is required. n n CRIMJ-100, Intro to Criminal Justice (3) CRIMJ-210, Law Enforcement Function (3) CRIMJ-220, Courts and Prosecution Process (3) CRIMJ-230, Corrections in America (3)

Associate Degree Requirements for the Major, continued – a grade of “C” or better is required. n n SOC-012, Criminology (3) GS* SOC-119, Race and Ethnic Relations (3) US* STAT-200, Statistics (4) GQ* PHIL-103, Introduction to Ethics (3) GH* (recommend PHIL 103 W for Writing Across the Curriculum credit) * May be double counted as General Education but does not count as double credits

Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice General Education Requirements: n Writing/Speaking (GWS) – 9 credits n Quantification (GQ) – 6 credits n Health Sciences (GHA) – 3 credits n Natural Science (GN) – 9 credits n Arts (GA) – 6 credits n Humanities (GH) – 6 credits n Social Sciences (GS) – 6 credits

Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Additional baccalaureate degree requirements n n n First Year Seminar (typically, PSU 003, taken during first two semesters [30 credits]) – 1 credit. Consider ADM J 083, a 3 credit course which meets the FYS requirement. United States Cultures (US) and International Cultures (IL) – 6 credits (courses which fulfill either requirement are designated USI – you still need 6 credits) Writing Across the Curriculum (W) – 3 credits

Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Requirements for the Major –a grade of “C” or better is required. n 37 credits of prescribed courses n 9 additional credits of criminal justice courses at the 400 level courses n 12 credits for the skills enhancement component n 128 total credits required for graduation

Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Skills Enhancement (12 credits) (Get form from advisor) n Students seeking this degree are required to plan and fulfill a skills enhancement portion of their academic plan. n Using the program form, choose an area you want to develop, a special body of skills that will complement your criminal justice degree.

Skills Enhancement For example: you might develop a body of course work that supports any one of these topics - You are NOT limited to these but this may spur your thinking… Juveniles Psychology Political Science Law English Chemical Dependency History Health

Skills Enhancement Courses identified on the skills enhancement petition may not be counted towards general education credits nor towards other requirements for the major. They can be courses that are being used to fulfill requirements for a minor.
