Birthday Treats o Please have birthday treats here by 2: 25. o Cookies and donuts seem to be the biggest hit with the kids. o Please do not send/bring ice cream or anything that needs to be cut.

The STAAR TEST (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) Reading, math, and science are tested in the fifth grade. 5 th grade is an SSI (Student Success Initiative) year, which requires students to pass certain assessments in order to be promoted to 6 th grade. Math – March 29 Reading – March 30 Science – May 11

Homework Please check the agenda book for homework assignments. Binder will be sent home every week with graded work. Please sign binder sheet and go over graded work. If there is a grade below a 70 please redo, sign and return within a week. WENT HOME TODAY!

Agendas A tool we find useful in communicating between school and home is the Agenda Book. These are still for sale through the office for $7. The Agenda Book is to be taken home each night. Please review nightly with your child. It is expected that every child practice the Covey Habits each day. It is our goal here at Canyon Ridge to produce student leaders. Students copy the days assignments and are asked to self-reflect at the end of each day.

Misbehavior will be noted by both student and teacher within the agenda book. 3 marks in agenda or less = E 4 -7 = S 8 -10 = N 11+ = U One office referral = automatic N or U LINKS teachers’ notes will be stapled in the agenda when there is a behavioral concern. These do not need to be signed or returned. Each note will count as a mark in the agenda.

Dress Code In accordance with NEISD policy, please remember the following when dressing for school: No hats inside the building Shorts must reach mid-thigh No spaghetti straps Natural hair colors only • •

Grading Grades are based on the following configuration: A B C D F 100 -90 89 -80 79 -75 74 -70 69 and below Students papers will be sent home each week. The most accurate tool for keeping track of your student’s grades is the parent portal.

Internet Permission In fifth grade we do many activities that require use of the internet and videos. We video tape learning activities to share with the grade level, and we use the internet for many activities throughout the year including using the library portal. Please make sure you update your child’s internet permission for this year so they can participate.

Funding our Pool Party • To help fund our 5 th grade party (including facility, DJ, food, etc. ), we sell shirts exclusively for our graduating 5 th grade class. The order forms went home yesterday and are due September 11 th. • There will also be a fundraiser this fall. If we fall short of our funding goal, we will have another fundraiser in the Spring.

Field Trips Fifth Grade will attend two field trips this year. We will have one in the Fall and one in Spring. As the dates approach, we will ask for donations to help with the cost.

Social Studies • States and Capitals – Students will be • required to learn all the states and their corresponding capitals, as well as the states’ locations. A letter will be sent home tomorrow with the dates of the quizzes. Each student will also receive one labeled map and one blank map to use. My website has all of these sheets and links to interactive websites the students can use to help with studying.

Science Vocabulary: Students will be writing all their vocabulary words in a Vocabulary Folder. This folder is for them to take home for studying purposes. It must come back to school daily. This folder will be helpful when it comes to studying for tests. The vocabulary words can also be found on my website.

th 5 Grade Science Lab We use our lab frequently to allow the students to experience science through interactive hands-on learning. Students work in groups to facilitate conversations and new discoveries. They utilize the Scientific Method when conducting experiments.

Science and Social Studies Homework • There will not be any weekly science and • • • social studies homework. If a student does not complete an assignment in class they may be asked to complete it that evening at home and return it the next day. On occasion there will be study guides sent home for major tests. Students will be required to return these completed. It is important that students review their states and capitals frequently.

Homework for ELAR Every Tuesday and Thursday homework will consist of Reading/Language Arts.

ELAR Strategies Our main focus points in 5 th grade will be • Making Connections • Asking Questions • Visualizing • Determining Importance • Inferring • Synthesizing We have introduced all the strategies already, and are beginning to focus on a strategy a day.

Library We will visit the library as a class to check out books once a week. Students will be allowed to use that time to locate new SSR books, Bluebonnet books, and read silently. • Students will be allowed to visit the library during class on a more flexible basis to let the students check out new books as needed. • Students have access to the NEISD digital library through Overdrive. Contact your teacher or Mrs. Howk if you need more information. •

Bluebonnet Books We expect students to read at least 5 Bluebonnet books by mid January. Students can check out books at our school library, the public library, and Overdrive. •

Book Projects Your child will complete 4 book projects, once per nine weeks. • • President/1 st Lady Cereal Box Family Movie Night Alternate Endings Message in a Bottle A rubric agreement page will go home at the beginning of each 9 weeks allowing your child 6 or more weeks to complete the project. You and your child will have a week to sign and return the rubric page stating you understand the rubric, expectations, and due date. Book projects will be counted twice and late points will be deducted if not turned in on stated due date.
