Foundations Needed for Learning

Our Schedule Snack will be from 10 : 15 to 10: 35 Lunch and recess are from 11: 30 -12: 10 (this is a change from last week) Bathroom breaks- before the morning TEAMs call, snack, lunch and with a signal when needed Specials (Music, Library, Quest, Art, Gym) will begin soon I will let you know if there assignments missing

Homework Expectations ▪ There is no homework assigned for this year. ▪ Instead your child could…play outside, call a relative, write a note and mail it, try a recipe, clean the car, fold laundry, organize the board games, collect things to donate, empty the dishwasher, sing and dance, brush the dog, vacuum, dust, make a positivity sign to hang in a window, dance, ride a bike, paint a picture, shred papers for you, walk the dog, practice tying shoes, perfect fort building, count by 5’s while hopping, read under a tree, write in a journal, sweep the porch, write kind messages and pictures in chalk on the sidewalk, make a race track out of chalk in the driveway for a bike or scooter, try writing with the nondominant hand, draw insects found outside in your notebook, invent a new game, use a timer to beat a record at doing something, stare at clouds, do a puzzle, play an instrument…

Behavior Plan- Class Dojo ▪ Focusing on the positive attributes/goals ▪ Kids will earn points as a class and individuals ▪ If you’d like to connect to your child’s account, please email me and I will send you a link ▪ To build on these goals we are using Second Step which is a Social and Emotional program to promote self and group awareness, these lessons will be taught in our class, with the student support counselor and physical education teacher

Supplemental Reading Instruction How will my child receive reading support with a Reading Specialist or Instructional Assistant?

Writing in the Classroom ▪ Begins with a mini lesson from a mentor text (to spark idea) ▪ Students write their ideas in their writer’s notebook (WN) ▪ Focus on ideas, second grade appropriate spelling, sentence structure, Beginning-Middle-End of a story… ▪ Spelling- common words for your child spelled correctly and those that can be ‘smart copied’. Correct 1 -2 mistakes within a sentence. ▪ There is a sentence rubric sticker, a small word list, yellow doublesided word-wall paper in their green folder so they can self-check their work.

Once it’s set up the first time, kids can access the apps by just tapping on them. Seating Options

▪ Packing their ‘Blue Bags’, snacks, water, and lunches will allow for fast transitions and fewer disruptions ▪ Communication- email is the best way to contact me, send a reminder email if I don’t respond after a day. I won’t be able to access my email often during the day since I’m using the laptop to teach from and hold the Teams meeting. ▪ Fine motor skills are still developing as second graders. I plan to send home optional activities so they can build those finger muscles- adjust as you’d like.
