Occupational therapy for adults undergoing total hip replacement PRACTICE GUIDELINE REVIEW

The Review Process Followed a scheduled review process, commencing in 2015 Guideline review group established – including two members of the original guideline development group and two new members of the RCOTSSTO NEC. The guideline question, objective and scope were unchanged, as were the criteria for inclusion or exclusion of evidence. Literature search was completed by the RCOT library.

The Review Process (cont. ) New evidence appraised. Consideration of any original material that was no longer appropriate and how this might need to be superseded or withdrawn. Consideration of any relevant feedback and comments received since the publication of the guideline. Development of recommendations where indicated by new evidence or knowledge. Update background information (statistics, policies, etc). Draft guideline circulated to peers and stakeholders.

What we found…… Additional evidence to support 15 existing recommendation statements. Minor amendments to two of those existing recommendation statements. Development of an additional recommendation. Amendments to titles / grouping of recommendations.

Amended recommendations 18. It is recommended that occupational therapists encourage early discussion and goal setting for community reintegration. - previously stated ‘including social and physical activities. ’ 23. It is suggested that given the increase in evidence of improved service user satisfaction and earlier functional independence, without adverse effects on dislocations rates, when hip precautions are relaxed or discontinued, occupational therapists engage in local discussion/review of hip precaution protocols with their surgical and multidisciplinary teams. - strengthened due to increased evidence.

New recommendation! 19. It is suggested that the return to physical and sporting activities is considered within an occupational therapy assessment and interventions. - considerable new evidence emerging in this area.
