IN MATH THIS YEAR… • • • Students must be familiar with their basic facts. These need to be automatic. Students will solve multi-step problems. Students will also learn how math relates to the “real world” • • That question, “why do we have to learn this? ” doesn’t really apply anymore Students will have to PROVE their thinking through writing and they must always show their work.

LITERACY GOALS Developing independent reading habits Applying word identification and vocabulary strategies Making connections and comprehending texts Focus will be on poetry, expository text, narrative text, drama, biographies, tall tales, myths and research.

During Daily 5 rotations, students practice… • Read to self • Read with someone • Work on writing • Word work • Listen to reading *Our classroom practices the Daily 3

HOW TO GROW AS A READER! • • Read non-fiction Improving fluency helps to improve comprehension and understanding of text • • • Encourage your child to read aloud at home Children are more likely to enjoy reading if they like what they are reading How much a child reads is linked to a child’s achievement in the classroom

WRITING GOALS Prewriting strategies Brainstorm Drafting Revising Editing (peer and self) Sharing and Publishing Grammar and spelling will be a prominent piece in the writing process this year. Help your child become familiar with the dictionary

SCIENCE GOALS Weather and Climate Human Body Systems Motion and Energy Ecosystems (we’re doing this right now)

SOCIAL STUDIES GOALS This year in social studies, we’ll study the United States from pre-colonial times to Reconstruction. We’ll focus on geography, economics, civics, and culture.

ASSESSMENTS Students will be assessed with the Standards Based Grading System (4, 3, 2, 1) Rubrics will be used to assess writing (both content and conventions) County and textbook assessments will be used for reading, math, social studies and science The grade level also uses common assessments to help us reflect on our teaching practices.

AS THE STUDENTS SAY… 4 3* “I get it! I can do it well!” 2 “I get it and I can use it. ” 3 “Since I can do/get this, I can figure out new things!” “I almost get it but I need help. ” 1 “I don’t get it yet. I need help!” *Please keep in mind that 1’s and 2’s aren’t failing. *100% on a test does not automatically mean “ 4”

CONFERENCES Formal conferences are held for all students in the 1 st and 3 rd quarter. I will send home a conference note soon Keep in mind, I’m happy to meet with you at any point during the school year, this is just when I have conference dates for everyone.

ODDS & ENDS Our Camp Flintlock field trip will be Wednesday, March 6 th. Our Jellybeans field trip will be the last day of school, Friday June 28 th. I have 4 computers in the front of the room if you would like to fill out the Volunteer Registration form. You may also come to school on Mondays, and the office staff will walk you through the process.
