Welcome to nd 2 Grade Parent Orientation

We will be working towards “growing our brains” this year.

• The best way to contact me is by a note in your child’s folder. If it is a time sensitive message, you will need to send a note or call the front office as I am not always able to check email and phone messages during the day. • Email: lgillum@aubreyisd. net cbond@aubreyisd. net • Phone: 940 -668 -0000 • Please visit my teacher webpage throughout the year for information regarding our schedule, helpful websites, spelling words, etc. • Important notes will come home in blue folders on Tuesday. Please take all of your child’s papers out and sign the folder before returning it Wednesday.

• Remind is a one of the best ways for me to communicate with you this year. • If you would like to sign up to receive messages, follow the direction on the “Remind Invitation sheet. ” • You do not have to respond to remind, it is just another way for me to send home pertinent information.

• Students can not enter the building until 7: 15. There is no supervision until this time. • The school day begins at 7: 45. If a student arrives after 7: 45 they are marked tardy. • When your child arrives to class at 7: 15, they will be given bellwork to begin their day.

• Please put all lunch money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on the outside. • There is a visitor table for you and your child only. • Microwaves may only be used by 3 rd and 4 th grade students.

• The school day ends at 3: 15. • If your child’s method of going home changes, please notify the teacher by note that morning, or call the office no later that 2: 45. • If there is no notification of the change of how your child is going home they will go home in the usual manner for your child’s safety. • If these procedures are not followed, your child will go home in the usual manner.

Dismissal • Children walking with siblings/neighbors will be escorted to the appropriate intersection. • Bike riders are required to get off and walk their bike on school grounds. Helmets are encouraged. • Only 3 rdand 4 th grade students may walk/ride bike independently. • All car pickups need to have a car tag. One will be provided to each family. Check with the office if you do not have one.

Classroom Expectations/Rules 1. Follow directions the first time they are given 2. Be kind. 3. Ask for help or attention in an appropriate manner. 4. Bring all materials daily. Grade Level Guideline 1: “There is a time and place for everything under the sun. ” Grade Level Guideline 2: “It is not what you say, but how you say it”

• Please look over and sign the Homework/behavior sheet which comes home nightly. Please be sure to look at this and initial each night to see how your child’s day was. • Math homework is due on Friday. • Please use a pencil on all homework. • Specific Spelling homework is not assigned, but your child should practice each night. • Once we have finished our assessments, your child will begin bringing home a guided reading homework and/or reading passage every night.

• I will send home the book your child reads in Reading groups. If I do not read with your child’s group that day, he/she will bring home the book he read with me the day before. Sometimes the book your child brings home will seem “easy”, but remember he/she may have already read it to me at least once. Repetitive reading of a book encourages better fluency, as well. • A large part of your child’s reading grade is based on the reading done during Guided Reading. Please be sure your child reads nightly. • I will give you some ideas to help your child with reading at home. • For each reading book that is lost, you will be fined $8. 00. This cost will go towards purchasing another book for our Literacy Library.

• Fact recall • Builds as child masters facts • 10 key skills • Only takes 2 -3 minutes each day!

Principal’s Math and Reading Club

• Your child will continue to learn to write narratives. Each child will be graded based on a rubric. New concepts, like a writing an expository and persuasive letter, will be added to the rubric each six weeks. • We keep a large portion of your child’s writing in their writing portfolio throughout the year. We will send all but two samples home at the end of the year.

*Please be sure your child is in dress code everyday. Teachers are required to fill out a report and send it home when students who are out of dress code. The Dress Code is on the Aubrey ISD website. Special Notes: • Plaid shorts or skirts are not allowed. • Mesh, tulle, or ballet type skirts are not allowed. • Feathers in the hair are not allowed. • Shirts must have a collar or be Aubrey ISD. • Leggings must be solid. • Dresses do not need collars. • Logos on shirts, sweaters, or hoodies must be no larger than 1 1/4 inch. • Button down shirts must be buttoned, even if there is a t -shirt underneath.

• We will have three class parties this year. • No party invitations may be handed out by your child or by the teacher at school. Hopefully, I will have a class directory made for you soon with most of the students’ addresses. No promises. • Treats sent to school to celebrate your child’s birthday must be pre-packaged and you must make arrangements with the teacher. Please make sure they are nut-free.

I will send home Scholastic books clubs order forms through out the year to give you an opportunity to buy inexpensive books for your child. This of course is optional. We do receive “Bonus points” that I can turn around and use to buy classroom books. Also, you can order your books on the Scholastic Book clubs website by using the classroom code on your book order form.

2 nd grade hopes to visit Sharkarosa in Pilot Point this year. We are still working on setting up a date. If you would like to attend as a chaperone, please be sure to fill out a volunteer back ground sheet. This has to be done each year. Information will be sent home regarding this trip later in the year.

• Parent Conferences will be October 23 rd through October 27 th. • Character Parade is October 27 th.

Another great way for us to get $$$ AEF Grants AEF grants are a fun way for our school to receive money for our classroom. AEF stands for Aubrey Education Foundation. This organization provides scholarships for graduating seniors, as well as grant money for individual teachers and classrooms. Last year the grants provided for our smart boards in many of the classrooms, and IPADS. Second grade was awarded a $1200 grant for word work for our Daily 5 reading time. The Aubrey Education Foundation’s biggest event is a dinner/ auction in the spring. At this big event they will have a delicious supper that you can pay to go to, as well as bid on items made at our school.

Monaco PTO! There is still one more way you can help our schools provide the best education for your child - join the Monaco PTO! We have the best PTO ever! Our PTO volunteers work so hard to provide for extra needs for the students and classrooms, as well as keep up teacher morale.

Please remember to collect and send box tops to school with your child. Each class has a box to collect them in. The collection of the tops help our PTO and school do great things for our kids!!

And who benefits from all this $$$? Your Child! So please have your child at school everyday possible, join PTO, and keep your eyes and ears open in the spring for information on this years’ AEF Dinner and Auction. Lets’ show Aubrey ISD that Monaco parents care the most about their students!
