Acting What is good acting? What is bad acting?
Good Acting Examples The Help: The story of young white woman and aspiring journalist Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan. The story focuses on her relationship with two black maids, Aibileen and Minny, during the Civil Rights era in 1962 Mississippi. Skeeter decides to write a book from the point of view of the maids— referred to as "the help"— exposing the racism they are faced with as they work for white families.
Good Acting Examples The Dark Knight: Bruce Wayne/Batman, James Gordon, and Harvey Dent form an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City, but are menaced by a criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Ledger) who seeks to undermine Batman's influence and create chaos.
Good Acting Examples I Am Sam: Sam, a man with a developmental disability, is the single father of Lucy, following their abandonment by her mother. Though Sam provides a loving and caring environment for precocious Lucy, she soon surpasses his mental ability. Other children tease her for having a "retard" as a father, and she becomes too embarrassed to accept that she is more intellectually advanced than Sam.
Good Acting Examples 12 Years a Slave: A memoir of a born free African -American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Northup worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release. In this scene, Patsey, a favored slave, has just returned from a visit with a neighboring plantation. Epps, the slave owner, is going to punish her for going. She explains why she went. . . for something as simple as soap.
Why are all these examples of good acting? ?
Bad Acting Examples Notice: ★ The overacting (way too much emotion and facial expressions) ★ The underacting (not enough emotion and facial expressions) **There is also bad writing, horrible special effects, cheezy music, and bad camera work!

Learning Targets - T-2/7 I CAN… ★ Get centered and focused with a mindfulness moment ★ With the class, discuss what being a good team member in drama means ★ In a group, draw a mind map on what qualities good group members have or a comparison chart of a leader vs. a boss ★ Play theatre games to build my acting skills
Mindfulness Moment: External Counting We are going to practice external counting. You will listen to and focus on my voice as I slowly countdown from ten to one.
Building A Successful Team ★ You are going to spend a lot of time working together and the way the group interacts with each other is the key to either enjoying the process or struggling to succeed. ★ Drama is unique in that your final grade will be influenced by other people. Right at the outset of the process, we need to establish some basic rules. ★ Remember - learning to work with others is a key life skill. This class will certainly develop this.
Building A Successful Team ★ EVERY member of the group is responsible for the writing, direction, set, costume, lighting and anything else that is an important part of the finished performance. ★ Don’t force anyone to do something they don’t want to do. You wouldn’t want someone doing that to you, so don’t do it to your group members. If you don’t want to do something, it becomes your responsibility to come up with another idea.
Building A Successful Team ★ One of the keys to successful ensemble work is learning to pool ideas. Don't let anyone consistently push their ideas and don't let anyone let everyone else do all the work! Everyone needs to do their fair share of the work. ★ What should you do if someone in your group is really quiet and isn’t contributing ideas?
Building A Successful Team ★ Each of you will have different skills. For example, someone might be exceptionally good at understanding blocking and could direct a key moment of the performance. Find out what these skills are and use them to the group’s advantage.
Building A Successful Team ★ Accept that different people are going to have different ideas. One of the hardest things to learn during the rehearsal process is that sometimes your own ideas are not necessarily the best ones. Practice saying: “That’s a good idea, what if. . . ? ”, “I wish I'd thought of that. . ” etc.
Building A Successful Team ★ Remember - the best work usually comes from groups with a positive, supportive atmosphere. ★ If you start with respect and kindness, you can work through anything! ★ Try to solve your problems within your group, but if you need help, see me!!
Your Task ★ Odd numbered groups (1, 3, 5): Brainstorm the qualities you think good group members need. ★ Create a mind map poster including: ○ Topic in the center, qualities of a good group member coming off it. ★ Even numbered groups (2, 4, 6): Brainstorm the differences between a LEADER and a BOSS. ★ Create a chart showing the differences
Simple Mind Map Simple Comparison Chart A Leader. . . A Boss. . .

Vocabulary Write the part in blue in your notes Blocking: Blocking has two different meanings. Which one a director is referring to will be obvious by the context in which he/she is speaking. 1. The first definition occurs during most rehearsals. This Blocking refers to the director telling you when and where to move onstage. 2. The other definition refers to an actor blocking another actor. This simply means that one actor is standing in a way in which the other actor cannot be seen. The second definition is used much less than the first.
Vocabulary Write the part in blue in your notes Cheat Out or Open Up: This is simply a request made for the actor to face more toward the audience. Although it is natural for people to face each other in real life, onstage the actor needs to make sure the audience can see and hear him/her.
