Welcome to our class! Third grade is a time where students go from being dependent students in the beginning of the school year to independent students by the end of the year. Students are taught how to be responsible by meeting deadlines for projects, class work, and homework. They are also taught how to be a friend and be compassionate and look out for one another.

What is the Co. GAT/IOWA and what does it mean for my child? The Co. GAT (cognitive abilities) and IOWA (test of basic skills) are tests that assess the basic skills your child should have learned since being enrolled in school. Co. GAT testing date: September 6 -8 IOWA testing date: September 11 -15 Georgia Milestones: April 11 -20* * Students will not be tested in Social Studies or Science in Milestones this year.

• Gifted Eligibility Meeting - Friday, August 11 at 9 AM in the Learning Commons. • Purpose: to share with the public the eligibility process in Cobb County. • All are welcome to attend.

When is conference week this year? Conference week for the 2017 -2018 school year is scheduled for October 16 -20. These conferences are mandated by Cobb County and important you attend. Students will have Early-Release all week at 12: 20. Remember to let me know if transportation will change on these days for your child.

Standard-based grades Level 3+= Exceeds Standards- In addition to the 3, makes applications and inferences beyond expectations. Level 3= Meets standards (Consistently and independently) Level 2 - Progressing (The student is making progress toward meeting the standards). Level 1 - Limited progress or does not meet standards.

What kinds of snacks are permitted during snack time in the classroom? Snack time in our room is usually around 9: 15 a. m. Healthy snacks that ARE permitted to eat: fruit and raw vegetables, granola bars, fruit roll ups, fruit snacks, crackers, goldfish crackers, yogurt, dry cereals without sugar. Snacks that are NOT permitted in class: soda, gum, chips of any kind, sugary dry cereals, or candy. Please help your child make healthy choices when selecting a snack. They will thank you for it! **WE HAVE CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN OUR SCHOOL ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS/NUTS, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT SEND IN ANYTHING WITH PEANUT BUTTER FOR A SNACK. THANK YOU!

Will there be homework every night? Students will record any information and homework in Agenda each day. Please initial that your child has read (20 -30 minutes or more) each night in their agenda for whatever day it is. Fluency Practice Spelling Focus Words Writing Math **It is the student’s responsibility to show you the agenda everyday, but since you know it’s coming home every night remind him/her to show it to you until you think he/she can remember to show it to you without you asking.

Transportation Please make sure that your teacher knows exactly how your child is going home each day. If there is a change in transportation, please give your teacher a written request. Phone calls only in emergencies to the front office ! If you wish for your child to be picked up by someone other than a parent, this person will need to be listed on your child’s registration form in the front office. By following and enforcing these guidelines, we are ensuring the safety of each and every student!

Medication at school… • It is Cobb County policy as well as Nickajack’s policy that NO student at ANY time have medication/prescription medication on them at ANY time. This means in his/her book bag. If you have a special circumstance you MUST see our school nurse. If the medication gets in the wrong hands, a very serious situation can occur. This includes and is not limited to: inhalers for asthma, cough drops, cough syrup, Tylenol/Advil, children’s vitamins, etc… • Everyone’s body reacts to things differently, so please be vigilant.
