What is the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)? • The EYFS is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception year. Your children will have been working within this stage during their time in previous early years settings. • It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning. It has developed around 4 themes that underpin the EYFS 1. A Unique Child- Observe what a child is learning (Learning Journeys) 2. Positive Relationships- What adults can do 3. Enabling Environments- What adults could provide 4. Learning and Developing- Children’s achievements

Characteristics of Effective Learning In the Early Years, how children learn is equally as important as what children learn. There are three characteristics of learning that have been recognised as being essential in order for children to achieve success. The three characteristics are: v Playing and Exploring- children investigate and experience Playing and Exploring- things. They have a go. v Active Learning- children concentrate and keep on trying if Active Learning- they encounter difficulties. They enjoy their achievements. v Creating and Thinking Critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things. It is the role of the adult to foster children’s learning characteristics in order to enable children to become confident and adventurous learners.

Punctuality & Attendance Please make sure your child comes to school on time—lateness can cause unnecessary upset and missed learning opportunities. Reception’s start time is 8. 45 am. Please ensure your child arrives on time. This is of particular importance during this time because the school is operating on a staggered start and finish schedule to eliminate contact between different groups of children. Please enter school through the gate on Lodge Road. Only one adult should accompany their child/children. Children will enter the building through the infant hall door. Then parents will exit through the carpark which will be safe and secure at this time. Members of staff will be there to guide you. Due to the change in current circumstances, Reception will finish at 2. 45 pm. Please collect your child promptly from the infant hall door. Please note that these times may be subject to change depending upon government guidelines.
