WHAT ARE NGSS – NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS? NGSS – Next Generation Science Standards

WHAT ARE NGSS – NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS? NGSS – Next Generation Science Standards are a new approach to look at science. It is exploring! It is asking the questions of “Why or How this occurs? ” Students are engaged in science labs and making connections to the world. Asking questions is a practice and that is what we want students to do. We want them to go out there and discover! NGSS Performance Expectations LS 1 -1. Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells, either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. LS 1 -2. Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function. LS 1 -3. Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells.

WELCOME TO LIFE SCIENCE! • What is Life Science? a branch of science (as biology, medicine, and sometimes anthropology or sociology) that deals with living organisms and life processes. 1. ANIMAL AND PLANT CELL – Parts and functions 2. ECOSYSTEMS – How organisms react with their environment? 3. PHOTOSYNTHESIS – How do plants make their own food? 4. ANIMAL BEHAVIOR/ANIMAL REPRODUCTION

PBL FOR THIS YEAR IS… This year our PBL – Problem Based Learning will be centered around how to save our polar bears. v. PROBLEM: Global Warming is eliminating our icebergs and in turn food supply for our polar bears. v. GOAL: To come up with a solution to help this dilemma. v. DESIGN: Students will design their own iceberg made of biodegradeable materials to hold 25 grams of weight and be able to float in a pool of water. v. RESEARCH PAPER + ICE BERG = MORE TO COME IN SCIENCE CLASSES!
