Welcome to Law A Level By the end of this course you will: • Studying Law gives students an understanding of the role of Law in today's society and raises their awareness of the rights and responsibilities of individuals. • By learning about legal rules and how and why they apply to real life, students also develop their analytical ability, decision making, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Law A Level: Course content You will study. . . In Year 12 In Year 13 Overview Example topics: The nature of Law Statutory Interpretation, Judicial Precedent The English Legal System Criminal and Civil courts, Sentencing, Bail Law of Torts Negligence Criminal Law Murder, Manslaughter, Theft
Law A Level: Assessment Exam board: Assessment: Percentage: Examination 100% Detail: • 3 exams sat at the end of Year 13. Paper 1: 2 hr (33%) Paper 2: 2 hr (33%) Paper 3: 2 hr (33%) A combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.
Law A Level Requirements Course requirements • General College entry requirements and grade 6 in English Language Which skills are needed? • • Essay writing skills Application skills to relate real life cases to law theory Expectations and workload • • 3 internal formal assessments completed per academic year 1 -2 homework assignments completed per week (essays or case research) High level of independent reading to support classroom learning An intrinsic interest in current affairs and politics
