Curriculum • Prescribed topics: – History of the Americas (perhaps you took that last year and we’ll cover it briefly this year) – Paper 3 – The causes and effects of 20 th century wars– Paper 2 – Authoritarian states of the 20 th century– Paper 2 – The Cold War: Superpower tensions and rivalries – Paper 2 – The move to global war (Japan, Germany and Italy, 1931 -1941)– Paper 1 • We will cover the entire 20 th century with heavy focus on the above topics
The Assessments • Paper 1 – Documents, O. P. V. L. and short essay • Paper 2 – 2 essays, each from a different section • Paper 3 – 3 Long essays • Internal Assessment – Research project (see guidelines) • Extended Essay* - Only if you are a diploma candidate and it doesn’t have to be in History
The Schedule • Monday – Current Events • Tuesday – Historical thinking skills (usually group work) • Wednesday – Seminar • Thursday – Reading Quiz and Lecture • Friday – Assessment (short essay and/or OPVL)
The Grading • • • Current Events – 10% Reading Quiz – 30% Seminar – 10% Written Assessments – 30% Internal Assessment (all parts individually) – 20%

The Internal Assessment • Students pick their own research topic but it has to be related to something we cover in this course • This whole process should take you about 20 hrs worth or work – Some time will be spent on it in class but most of it will be done outside of class and without my help • ALL WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN!!!! – no plagiarism, so learn how to cite properly! • We will be going to SUNY Albany’s library at some point in the fall to get familiarize you with the library and get you set up to borrow books • Three parts Identification and Evaluation of Sources, Investigation, Reflection • Your work must include a bibliography that is consistently cited – MLA or Chicago Manual Style
Identification and Evaluation of Sources • This section requires you to analyze in detail two of the sources you will be using in your IA • You must: – Clearly state the research question – Include a brief explanation of the nature of the two sources and how they are relevant to the investigation – With reference to their origins, purpose and content, analyze their values and limitations • Worth 6 marks • 500 words
Investigation • This section requires you to answer your research question • The investigation must: – Be clearly and effectively organized – Contain critical analysis that is focused clearly on the question – Have a conclusion that you draw from your analysis • Worth 15 marks • 1300 words
Reflection • This section requires you to reflect on what doing this investigation demonstrated to you about the methods and challenges of historical research • Some discussion questions that might help you: – What methods used by historians did you use? – What did your investigation show you about the limitations of these methods? – What are the challenges facing a historian? • *If you’re taking TOK, these are similar to Historical TOK questions • Worth 4 marks • 400 words
