Welcome to Historic Codrington! Codrington Village was founded in the mid-17 th century by British colonists. Barbuda was leased from the Queen by the Codrington family for most of the colonial era. After the end of slavery in the British Empire in 1833, Barbudans reclaimed their island have held all land in common into the modern era. Today, Codrington Village is filled with historic buildings that remind us of our past. Come enjoy a walking tour of historic Codrington Village! Codrington Village in 1818 #1. Castle Landing served as Barbuda’s second largest port during the Codrington era, after River Landing. #2. The Ginnery was originally used for processing cotton, later used for storing sea salt, and today is used as a council hall. #3. Codrington Castle Well Codrington Castle was used as a fortification, a residence and a storage facility. Toward the end of the colonial era, Barbudans rose up against slavery and oppression and captured the castle. These early Barbudan heroes were burned in front of where Castle Well now stands when British soldiers retook the island. Today, we remember and honor their sacrifice. #4. BARC #5. Government House was the administrative center of Barbuda at the end of the colonial era. #6. Duck Pond is the lowest point of the village where all the water drains to. #7. The Village Wall The village wall was used as a gate way for access into and out of Codrington Village. It separated people from animals. #8. The Village Well was used for drinking, washing, and other home uses. #9. Low Pond was used for herding animals.
