1. Respect- Talking I expect you to respect me, my classroom, my stuff, your classmates, and yourself. What do you think this looks like? - - If I’m talking, you shouldn’t be. If I ask for quiet, it should BE quiet. I DO NOT LIKE repeating myself 50 thousand times because you weren’t paying attention when I explained something the first time. If someone is reading aloud, whether it’s myself or a classmate, you should have your eyes on the page and be following along. If I ask you to stop doing something, or ask you to move, DO NOT ARGUE WITH ME. The ONLY acceptable responses are “Yes, Ms. Wyce” or “Yes, Miss. ” DO NOT waste everyone’s time by arguing about how another student was talking too, or whatever it was. Just STOP. 6

1. Respect- Talking (AICE) We will be discussing some controversial issues in this class, and there may be times that you don’t agree with another person’s point of view. THAT’S OKAY. That’s the point of discussions: to hear other opinions and learn new things that may change our own perspective. But no matter how different someone’s opinion is from yours, there will be ZERO TOLERANCE for disrespectful behavior toward others. We will sometimes have to agree to disagree. DO NOT belittle, make fun of, or shame someone for their opinion. 7

1. Respect- My Classroom - Clean up after yourself. I am NOT your mother or your maid. You are young adults. There are trash cans EVERYWHERE. Return the stuff I lend you. If you need a pencil, a pen, a highlighter, whatever, just go to the supply table and get it. Then PUT IT BACK when you’re done. 8

1. Respect- Interruptions - - - If you have to go to the bathroom, don’t interrupt the class. Raise your hand, point to the door, and I’ll nod or shake my head. If we’re in the middle of taking notes, don’t bother. The answer will be NO. No bathroom passes during the first or last 10 minutes of class. This is a SCHOOL-WIDE POLICY. When you go to the bathroom, you MUST sign the log that is hanging on the wall! This is a safety issue. If something happens or if we have a drill, I need to know where you are! If you are gone for longer than five minutes I WILL sic security on you and if you’re not where you’re supposed to be you WILL lose ALL pass privileges AND all conduct points for that WEEK. 9

1. Respect- Interruptions - Please stay on topic. If you have a question that does not relate to what we are talking about in class, write it down so you remember and then come ask me later. For example, if you were absent, DON’T ask in the middle of class what we did the class before. There is a time and a place for that, and it is NOT during class lecture/ notes/ discussions etc. 10

1. Respect- Language - Use appropriate language in class. The English language is boundless, with a plethora of words you can use to perfectly express yourself! Yes, sometimes profanity can add humor to a situation, or can help express strong emotions, but it is NOT appropriate in class. This includes offensive words, racial slurs, insults, and language of a sexual nature. Use salty language on your own time, not in my room. Show some maturity. 12

2. Effort! - - This is one of the MOST important things to remember in my class. Effort will get you far. Laziness will not. DO YOUR WORK and do it WELL! Make sure it is legible!!! If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it, so you’ll have to do it again, which just makes more work for both of us. Make sure EVERY ASSIGNMENT is LABELED and DATED and in chronological order or it will be a ZERO!!! Remember to put YOUR NAME on anything you turn in!! 13

2. Effort! - When you are working in groups, it is ESPECIALLY important to do your part! If you don’t do your job, you’ll be working alone all year. - Extra effort = Extra points! If I’m grading your binders and I notice that you wrote more notes than required, or wrote amazing vocabulary sentences, I might give you extra points! This has made a HUGE difference in my students’ grades in the past! 14

Do Now #2: Our mascot A mascot is a person or thing that is supposed to bring good luck or that is used to symbolize a particular event or organization. In Japan, there are mascots for EVERYTHING, not just sports and schools, but for prefectures, businesses, and train stations. Here at Somerset, our school mascot is the cougar. In this class, you will propose ideas and come up with a mascot for your period. What are some mascots that you know of? What do you think they represent? What do you think would be a good mascot for your class? Are there any mascots that you can think of that are controversial? Write about mascots in AT LEAST FIVE SENTENCES!!! 15

2. Effort- Communication - - - Communication is key, and this goes for all your teachers. If you’re having trouble, tell me what’s going on. Email me, send me a message through Remind, come talk to me before or after school, but let me know what’s going on! I’m not perfect. I’m a human, I make mistakes. If you check Plus Portals and notice something is wrong, LET ME KNOW!!! Maybe I missed your assignment when I was grading, or maybe yours was accidentally left in the drawer. The point is, be proactive in your own education and grades! Check Plus Portals regularly!! This does NOT mean I want everyone emailing me the day after an assignment was due asking about your grade. Again, I’m human! 16

2. Effort- Communication IMPORTANT TIP: Take a picture of EVERY assignment before you turn it in! This goes for ALL your classes! I’m not saying I lose assignments, but it’s a good rule of thumb, because sometimes stuff happens and teachers can’t give a grade to something they haven’t seen. True, if something gets lost, it’s not your fault, but instead of maybe having to re-do something, snap a quick pic with your phone as a backup! AICE- Let me know what’s going on in your other classes! 17

2. Effort- Preparedness & Organization - Come to class prepared, and keep your binder organized!!! Make sure you have your assignments ready when they’re due. Make sure you have your Reading Log or Lit Circle Book with you at all times (English)!!! If your binder is an explosion of papers, I WON’T GRADE IT!!! If you take your binder home, make sure you BRING IT BACK! If your binder is NOT in the bin when I do a binder check, you will receive ZEROS for ALL ASSIGNMENTS! If you take it home, tell me!! 18

3. Honesty - Lies - When a friend of yours lies to you, or betrays you, will you ever trust that person again? Probably not. The same is true in school. If you didn’t do an assignment, don’t make up a bunch of crap to feed me. It tarnishes our relationship and I’ll never be able to trust you again. Tell me the truth. I know everyone has other things going on in their lives that can get in the way of school work. I understand. Just don’t lie to me. 21

3. Honesty- Academic Dishonesty- What is it? If you remember nothing else about today’s class, make sure you remember this: DO YOUR OWN WORK!!!!!! I LOATHE CHEATERS!!!! - - Academic dishonesty is ANY kind of action that relates to cheating. This includes copying information from the internet, a book, a friend, a family member, etc. Any time you try to pass off work that did not come FROM YOUR OWN HEAD, IT IS CHEATING!!! If another student asks to see your binder, SAY NO! If two students turn in the same work, BOTH will face the SAME consequences!!! 22

- - - 4. Participation I need you to be present, physically AND mentally. I understand that some people are shy, and may not want to talk in class. That’s okay, but please participate if and when you feel comfortable, and don’t be zoning off. This means don’t be staring off into space, or nodding off in your seat, or whispering to other students about what you did last weekend. If you’re in groups, you need to be doing the work assigned, NOT chit chatting. If that happens, we will NOT do any group work and all assignments will be individual. If you don’t understand something, ASK! Chances are you’ll be helping someone else out since you’re probably not the only one with that question!! 24

4. Participation doesn’t only refer to contributing to discussions in class, it also means DOING YOUR WORK. You must PARTICIPATE in your own education by fulfilling your academic obligations! DO YOUR Reading Logs, your articles, your notes, etc. If there is a quiz coming up, STUDY for it! If there is a project due, don’t procrastinate! Get it done! Before midterms and finals, STUDY! Form a study group and work together! 25

Classroom Rules 26

Cell Phones All cell phones MUST be turned OFF and put in the pocket by the door. Put your phone in the pocket that matches the number on your desk. If I hear or see a phone, or notice that there aren’t enough phones in the pockets, I’ll conduct a phone check. If your phone is there, you get 10 points. If it’s not, you lose ten points. If you don’t have your phone when I conduct a phone check, I need an email from home. 27

Food / Gum This is another school-wide policy that Mr. G is very serious about, and so am I: - NO FOOD OR GUM IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM!!! The ONLY thing you can eat in my class is candy I give you. When I give you candy, PUT THE WRAPPER IN THE TRASH RIGHT AWAY!!! If you’re eating or chewing gum, and it becomes an issue, there will be consequences!!!! You WILL be cleaning my room in detention! 28

Talking - Again, if I’m talking, you should NOT be. If I ask you to stop talking, or to move, DON’T ARGUE WITH ME, just DO IT!!! If someone else is reading, DO NOT BE TALKING!!! You need to be LISTENING and following along!! PAY ATTENTION in class! 29

Tardiness You MUST be IN the class and IN your seat when the bell rings!!! I DO NOT LIKE having my time wasted, so BE ON TIME TO CLASS! When you’re late, you have to get a pass from the office, and if you’re late three times, you get a lunch detention (1 st period- School policy!) All other classes- I WILL mark you tardy when you come in my class late! If you are late three times in a quarter, you will get a lunch detention with me! 30

Entering/Leaving the Room - - - When you come into my room, I expect you to turn of your phone, put it in the pocket that corresponds to the number on your desk, get your binder, put your bag in the Reading Corner, and get started on your Do Now. (English) AICE, same, but be ready for your CNN 10, so open your binder to a CNN sheet. Class is over WHEN I SAY SO. You should NEVER line up at the door before the bell rings! You should also NEVER go get your phone until AFTER the bell has rung and you are on your way out the door! A few minutes before the bell, everyone will put their binders back in the bin NEATLY, in my OCD way, get your bags, and go back to your seat until the bell rings AND I end class. 33

Class Conduct Points (Summarize the info) - Every day, each class will start the day with 20 points (10 for 1 st period) The class can GAIN or LOSE points based on the class behavior and participation. The class with the MOST POINTS at the end of the semester will win a class celebration!!! 34

Individual Conduct Points (Summarize in your notes) - - Every day, each of you will earn 5 points (3 points for period 1) TOWARD YOUR GRADE just for being here and doing what you’re supposed to. You can earn EXTRA conduct points for things such as excellent behavior, extra effort, kind words and/or actions, etc. You can LOSE conduct points for things such as talking out of turn, breaking rules, being disruptive, etc. These points can make a BIG IMPACT on your GRADE!!! Your choices about your behavior in this class COUNT!!! 35

Absences It is SO important to be present in class. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and get it done! If you were absent, you STILL HAVE TO DO THE WORK!! If you miss a quiz, you have ONE WEEK to make it up. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE QUARTER! English- There assignment checklists online, and you can ask me BEFORE school, AFTER school, or come see me during lunch. I will also have another student volunteer fill out a “While You Were Gone” Sheet, which they will put in the wall file for your class. There is NO EXCUSE for missing work due to absences!!! 36

Email Etiquette If you email me, tell me WHO YOU ARE and WHAT CLASS PERIOD YOU’RE IN!!!!! KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE! Do your best to use proper grammar!! 37

Substitute Teachers I respect substitutes, and I expect you to as well, if I am out sick. That being said, NEVER GIVE YOUR WORK TO A SUB. That’s one of the reasons I have the drawers. If something is due on a day when I’m out, PUT IT IN THE DRAWER. 38

DO NOT CHEAT IN ANY WAY!!!! Cheating includes, but is not limited to: Copying someone else’s work, NO MATTER WHAT THE ASSIGNMENT IS. NO ONE should have the same answers for ANYTHING, which includes vocabulary sentences, Reading Logs, Do Nows, comprehension questions, etc. Copying information from the internet. The internet makes it very easy for students to cheat, but it also makes it very easy for me to CATCH YOU. AND I WILL!!!! 48

Put time and thought into everything you do! Remember, the more effort you put into the class the more you will learn and the higher your grade will be! If you do an assignment totally wrong but I can tell you put time into it and did your best, we can work together to find a solution!
