Herman’s Goals for 2017 -2018 Mission: Working together to achieve the potential in every student. Vision: To create a 21 st century middle school that engages our students, staff and the community. Goal/Focus: For the 2017 -2018 school year, we will improve our ability to engage students in their learning by implementing strategies for students in rigorous and relevant learning environments.

Counselor Connections • Parents should email the teachers FIRST with questions regarding their classroom and grades. • COUNSELOR APPOINTMENTS: • Parents wanting to speak with their child’s counselor need to make an appointment. Appointments are on Mondays and Thursdays, 8: 30 -10: 00 and are scheduled only for a half hour. • Students wanting to speak with their counselor need to fill out a counseling slip found in the counseling hallway. • EMERGENCIES: These parents do NOT need an appointment: If there is an issue of safety please come to the front office to see a counselor.
School Hours • School hours are 8: 05 a. m. to 2: 30 p. m. with the exception of late start Wednesdays. • School begins at 9: 20 a. m. on Wednesdays. • Students are only supervised from 7: 50 a. m. on M, T, R, F and 9: 05 a. m. on Wed. • Students need to leave campus by 2: 40 or be participating in an after school event. • Please verify where your child is after school and make arrangements for after school supervision if needed.

Student Classes • • • Language Arts Math Science Social Studies P. E. Elective: Engineering Career Exploration, Globaloria, Band, Keyboarding, 7 th grade wheel (Lifeskills 7 and Art) or 8 th grade (Lifeskills 8 and 3 D Art) or English 3 D, Read 180 • Note: Schedules can be picked up at the conclusion of orientation by Room 110 outside the gymnasium.
The First Day ➢On Monday, Aug. 14 th at 8: 00 a. m. school begins. The tardy bell will ring at 8: 05 a. m. ➢Staff will be on hand to help students find their classes. Maps are available tonight on the tables. ➢For help, students may report to the flag pole for assistance.
Suggested items for the first days of school! • Backpack or bag (Backpack Donation Program) • Three-ring binder with dividers • Paper, pencil, pens, tissue • Full name on everything • Student ID number for lunch card system. This number is located on their class schedule.
The First Week ➢All students will attend a welcome rally and assembly the first week where we go over all school activities, procedures, expectations, etc. ➢Tardies and dress code reminders will be given the first week. ➢Please limit deliveries to the front office such as lunches, PE clothes, money, etc.
Student Drop Off and Campus Access • ** Students may be dropped off along Blossom Ave. in our drop off loop which is two lanes. Please drop off curbside and them pull over to exit. ** • When visiting the front office for counseling, health clerk, attendance clerk or the administration offices you can park in the front parking lot. • Fences are unlocked around campus in the morning for entry. After the tardy bell rings all gates are locked and you must enter through the front office.
Student Drop-off and Pick-up • We encourage students to use crosswalks and appropriate safe walking patterns. • Parking in the front of the school is a 5 -minute loading zone. If you leave your car, you may be ticketed. • Traffic is monitored by SJ Police. • Students must use the sidewalk and crosswalks. Jaywalking is illegal. • Skateboard and bike riders must wear a helmet and walk while on campus.

Free and Reduced Lunch • Free and reduced lunch applications will go home the first week of school and must be renewed each school year they are good through Sept. 29 th. Apply online at https: //oakgrovesd. sodexomyway. com or through the schoolloop link.
Lunch • Students will use their student ID number to access the electronic lunch cards • Snacks are sold at lunch and break time • Break: 15 minutes and Lunch: 36 minutes • Lunches are sold for $2. 75 per lunch • Brunch is $1. 50 per meal • Milk is sold for $0. 50 • Prepay for school lunches at Ezschoolpay. com
Grading • 24 -hour access on Schoolloop for current assignments and grades. First week of school sign-up for Schoolloop. com • Six-week progress reports sent home with students. • Two semester grades will be mailed home. • Please update your email address and phone changes with front office all year long or via infinite campus.
PE Clothes • The Herman PE uniform consists of an official shirt, shorts and athletic shoes, or black shorts and a gray t-shirt. • Navy Blue/Herman Logo sweat clothes are optional. • Herman/District logoed PE clothing can be purchased from the school for $26. 00 which includes a lock. • Students need a school-issued lock and are assigned their own locker in the PE locker room.
School Lockers • Students may also elect to have a general locker. These are shared with another student and are available the 3 rd week of school.

Student Recognition Programs • Patriot Bucks and E 2 Referrals: Awarded by teachers and staff for positive behavior. • CJSF : For students earning 3. 0 GPA or higher and completing community service. • Student of the Month: Selected by teachers and based on monthly character traits. • Patriot Pack: Awarded to students for participation in various activities. • Block H Awards • Honors Night (February): For academic recognition.
Student Clubs • Student Body Association: Student-led government and student officers. Must meet guidelines and/or be elected to some positions. • Club Day: Students get to choose clubs that interest them! • After-school clubs: Homework Center, Yearbook, Makerspace • Roller Hockey Club - Friday Nights

Classroom Behavior Expectations You are expected to be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, and SAFE at all times. Each individual classroom rules, procedures and instructions must be followed. You may… You may not… Experience different rules in different classes. Expect each teacher to do run their class the same way. Oak Grove School District Dress Code Student Appearance must not be a distraction. • Wear clothing or accessories (shoes, shoelaces, hair ties, earrings, jackets, bags, lunch boxes, etc. ) in any color other than predominantly RED. • Fingertip length shorts, skirts, and torn jeans. • Midriff and undergarments must be covered. • Graphics should follow school safety guidelines. • Professional sports team gear can only be worn on sports jersey days – 1 st Friday of the Month. • All head coverings may be worn outside only with the brim facing forward. Please read the complete dress code in the student handbook.
• • • School Safety Students are our responsibility to and from school. Please support your student in this by encouraging them to go straight to school and home. Loitering at the park or Nob Hill before and after school is discouraged, especially on late-start mornings. Supervision starts 15 minutes before and ends 10 minutes after school. Drop off students after 7: 50 a. m. M, T, R, F and at 9: 05 a. m. on Wednesdays. Pick up daily before 2: 40 or verify their location. Students are expected to respect the neighborhood and neighbors’ yards. Climbing on school fences will result in a Friday School.
School = Learning Attendance • All absences must be verified. Only excused for illness, doctor or dentist appointment or death in the family. • Students whose absences exceed 10% of days enrolled (18 days) or have 3 or move unverified absences will be monitored through the SARB process. Tardy to School • Tardy students need a pass to enter school if they arrive late. • Unexcused tardies will result in a corrective action. • State law only allows excused tardies for doctor/dentist appointments or illness.
Student transportation • Permission slips are required for students who ride bikes and/or scooters. • Locks and bike helmets are required. • Applications Coming Soon: Skateboards are allowed only to those who apply for a skateboard locker. Students will need to purchase a school lock and will be assigned a locker card.
Cell Phones • We support communication between parent and students. However, you must have signed contract for cell phone use on the Herman campus. • Cell phones must be off and out of sight during class time. • Parents: If you need to reach your student during the school day, please call the school directly. • Violation of the school cell phone contract will result in corrective action by administration. After the 3 rd time, phones are kept until the last day of school. • We are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged phones.

All you need is your child’s student ID number. Approval takes 24 hours. The site is updated weekly with events, grades, emails, etc. • The first few weeks of school are very busy in the front office and in counseling with new student enrollments. Email is the best way to communicate with the office staff, counseling and administration. • We can not accommodate walk-in meetings for counseling and administration. We would be happy to schedule an appointment for you. For an appointment with administration, please call or email the front office.
