Meet the teacher: ▶ ▶ ▶ My name is Elizabeth Scheibl and I have been teaching in Westerly for 25 years. I grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey I graduated from Providence College in 1990 with a degree in Elementary/ Special Education and English Literature. ▶ I live in Barrington, Rhode Island with my husband, Bill and three children, Max -16, Emma-14, and Lily-12.
My philosophy I love kids, and I love teaching! I incorporate creative and challenging lessons in my classroom that peak my students' interests each and every day. I expect that ALL students will give 100%, as I do. If they put in the EFFORT, they will Succeed!
Classroom Policies: 1. Homework: ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ Students will receive HW and it is due the next day unless otherwise specified. HW can be found on my web page HW is an extension of the class work and is expected to be done independently It is the student’s responsibility to write their HW in their planner. HW is usually graded If a HW assignment is forgotten, partial credit will be give if it is brought in the following day. Repeated missed assignments will result in parent contact and points will be deducted at teacher discretion.
2. Grading: ▶ ▶ ▶ Assignments are graded by point value (Individual teachers will assign point values) Tests, quizzes, and projects will have larger point values Study guides are provided for all tests. Tests are assigned approximately 1 week in advance All test and quiz dates are posted on my class web page- Studying is HW! Retakes will NOT be given due to advanced test notification, class review, and study guide availability
3. MMS and Web. Pages ▶ ▶ ▶ Be sure to sign up for MMS/School Fusion MMS is the BEST way for parents and students to monitor grades and keep track of HW assignments Check my class page regularly for HW assignments, study guides, newsletters, and much more
4. Schedule: ▶ ▶ ▶ All classes are approx. 55 minutes, with the exception on Block 3 in which Lunch/Recess take place. This block is 40 min. Wednesday’s classes are shorter to include ‘Area Time’ What is Area time? Area time is an opportunity for the whole team to do activities together or for students to move from room to room working on projects, preparing for tests, getting extra help, making up missed work, etc. Twice a week we will have an ‘Intervention Block’ What is an Intervention Block? This block is designed for teachers to be able to pull students from specials to receive additional support in a particular core subject. Students are pulled at teacher’s discretion.
Daily English Class Requirements: 1. Students are expected to be prepared for class. Each day students will be required to bring the following materials to class: 1. Pencil(s) 2. English Folder- Yellow, 2 Pocket 3. Marble Composition Notebook- this will be left in class unless students are completing an assignment or studying for a quiz 4. Wordly Wise- They will be given this in class and it should remain in their folders for daily check-ins. 2. Students are expected to bring HW in on time. 3. Students are expected to follow PBIS: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe
What will we be learning? Here is just a glimpse… ▶ During each of the 4 Quarters students will read a variety of fiction and non fiction texts and work on reading strategies: High Five and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Readers. ▶ ▶ Each quarter typically has 1 large writing piece and several smaller writing pieces associated with the texts. The following grammar will be reviewed throughout the year: Types of sentences, Subjects and Predicates, Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, and Adverbs ▶ Wordly Wise is done school wide (5 -8). Students will have approx. 7 -10 days to complete each lesson. All lessons have a Quizlet set created to be used for study purposes.

Quarter 1: Understanding and Responding to Literary and Informational Text Reading: ▶ Multiple Fiction/Non fiction titles such as: Dangerous Animals’, ‘Saving the Great White Monster’ ‘Out of the Tornado’ and ‘Saving the Sloths’ Writing: Effective Paragraph Writing (ACES), Response to Literature, and Introduction to Research
Quarter 2: Recognizing, Understanding, and Writing Opinions Across Literary and Informational Text Reading: Multiple titles such as: ‘Do kids Really Need Cell Phones? ’ , ‘Should Parents Help with Homework? ’ ‘Extreme Sports, Yes or No? ’ and ‘ Is Fast Food Good for You to Eat? ’ As well as…‘The Great Kapok Tree’, ‘Dear Children Of The Earth’ and ‘Where The Wisdom Lies: A Message From Nature's Small Creatures’ Writing: Effective Paragraph Writing (ACES) Opinion Essay and Response to Literature
Quarter 3: Connections and Relationships to Informational Text and Writing to Inform and Explain Reading: Multiple Non fiction Titles such as: ‘ A Race Against Time’, ‘How to Save Two Dolphins’, ‘The Volcano that Changed the World’, and ‘The Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius’ Writing: Effective Paragraph Writing (ACES) and Response to Literature
Quarter 4: Critical Text Analysis and Integration of Information and Research Reading: Multiple Non fiction texts on habitats. Rainforest, Tundra, Taiga, Ocean, Coniferous Forest, etc… Writing: Effective Paragraph Writing (ACES) and Response to Literature, Research
