Welcome to Debate Club! 2017 -2018

Our Debate Style: • This style involves two person teams • There are 4 parts in every debate: the constructive speech, the cross exam, the rebuttal, and the rehab and summation • The proposition team is now called the affirmative team, and the opposition team is now called the negative team • Just like before, the affirmative team carries the burden of proof, meaning they go first and last • However, in case of a tie, the negative team will win

Constructive Speech • The constructive speech is the same job that the first speaker had last year • The constructive speech can be up to 5 minutes long, and you may have up to 3 points supporting your argument • Remember to include evidence to support your argument, and remember to always CITE YOUR EVIDENCE • Also remember to only get evidence from credible websites, or else the other team could say your evidence is invalid

Cross Exam • The cross exam is one of the hardest parts of this format • In the cross exam, a person from the opposing team will go up to the podium to try to ask questions to the other team to make their argument sound weaker • The cross exam will last up to 3 minutes

Rebuttals • The rebuttal speech is a speech created to prove to the judges why the other team’s points are wrong • This speech can be up to 5 minutes long • You must have a rebuttal against each of the other team’s points and valid reasoning why their point is wrong • You may not add any additional points

Rehabilitation and Summation(Rehab) • This is an up to 3 minute speech • In the rehab, you will refute any claims made by the other team that you didn’t already refute in the rebuttal speech • Then you will move on to the summary, where you will sum up to the judges your three points and your main reasonings or arguments for each point • You will finish up your rehab with a compelling reason, which is a sentence that sums up your whole argument and convinces the judges that you are right
