3 A’s Schedule • Monday: ELA, Integrated Arts, Math, Lunch/Recess, Social Studies/Science • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday: ELA, Special, Math, Lunch/Recess, Social Studies/Science, WIN (Orchestra is on Tuesday in place of Social Studies/Science. )

3 A’s Behavior Plan • RESPECT is the anchor to our classroom rules • Popcorn Points (both individual and class) • Team Points • Green light, yellow light, red light (3 strikes)

Curriculum • Social Studies: Kids Discover, Communities Near and Far, and supplement Macmillan/Mc. Graw-Hill “Pennsylvania: Adventures in Time and Place” • Science: Scott Foresman Science • Communication Arts: Harcourt “Storytown” *6 themes: School Days; Together We Can; As We Grow; Tales to Tell; A Place For All; Discoveries • Writing: The Writing marks have an emphasis on organization, sentence structure and spelling application. It is only given twice a year. • Spelling is done weekly and focuses on a specific skill • Olweus Bully Prevention Program • Math: Go Math Series & Reflex Math for basic facts

Math Curriculum • Instruction will focus on inquiry-based methodology. • Problem solving will be emphasized in all units. • All Pennsylvania Core Standards for Mathematics will be addressed. • GO MATH! is our textbook series. • Each student will receive “mini-books” for all units. Students can write in their consumable books. • There are new online resources that can be used at home for additional practice and reinforcement.

GO MATH! Online Resources For best results, use Chrome as your Internet browser. 1. From the North Allegheny Homepage, click on “+Parents. ” 2. Then select “Online Textbook Resources. ” 3. Select “Elementary Level Resources. ”

Reflex Math • Reflex makes it easy to get students math fact fluent and ready for more complex math. • Assessment, coaching, and practice is delivered via a fun, game-based approach. And because it is fully adaptive, students get the individualized instruction they need to be successful. • Rocket Math 2 Minute Timing will be used as assessments to progress monitor once, or twice, a week.

Homework • Homework is copied from the assignment chart daily. Please initial it each night. • Math is usually assigned four nights a week. • The spelling and vocabulary list is given on Friday. There are two spelling practice pages and a cursive sheet. The cursive sheet is given on Monday and is due Tuesday. The practice pages are given on Tuesday and are both due on Thursday. • The spelling and grammar tests will be on Thursday. The reading and vocabulary tests are usually on Friday.

Homework • If students miss class because of pull-outs (GOAL, Instruments, Speech, etc. ), it is their responsibility to get the missed homework from the teacher. • Late Assignments: It will be written in assignment book and marked “late”. Please initial that spot as well. The late assignment should be turned in the following day with your initials in the assignment book. • If you are requesting homework, please call the office by 10: 00 AM. Do not only email me

Grades/Report Card • Tyler System: It will allow you to view your child’s grades. • Report Card grades are based on percentages. The areas that are listed underneath the subject determine how the grade is derived. • Categories underneath each subject area will be marked as a strength, satisfactory, or needs improvement.

Miscellaneous Items • POS Account: Money can be added to account • Book Orders: Checks written to Scholastic & online ordering available • Birthdays: 23 students in class • Star of the Week: 8 -10 pictures with captions on a posterboard • Communication: notes, online weekly update, Email: mwilliams@northallegheny. org

Standardized Testing • IOWAs are scheduled during the week of January 7 -11, 2019 • The PSSA English Language Arts Tests are April 15 -26, 2019. • The PSSA Mathematics Tests are April 29 -May 3, 2019. • No vacation requests will be granted during these times.

Request for supplies • Please make sure that your child has the following items in school: *expandable 5 -pocket folder *a highlighter and pen *scissors *post-it notes • Please send in a package of disinfecting wipes for classroom use. The following brands are approved by the district: Clorox, Lysol, or Target brand, as well as Member’s Mark (Sam’s Club) or Kirkland (Costco).

North Allegheny Implementation Plan 2018 -2019 School Year Focus of Year 2: - Continue to use AIMSweb Plus as our universal screener. - Continue to differentiate our core reading instruction - In grades K-5, implement a differentiated/flexible reading period 4 days a week (What I Need Period “WIN Period”) - During this 45 minute (grades 2 -5) or 30 minute (K-1) period can receive enrichment, reinforcement and remediation on ELA skills. Groups will be flexible and based upon multiple forms of data. During this time the reading specialists, interventionists, GOAL and other related supports teachers will be working with the homeroom teachers to support students in giving them whatever they need to demonstrate mastery and growth.
