Reading/Writing Workshop Time to Read Time to Write Time to Discuss Comprehension – understanding what we read – is the overarching goal. Support for Comprehension: • Accurate Fluent Reading • Background Knowledge • Oral Language and Vocabulary • Reading-Writing Connections • Multiple Strategies

Writing We will utilize the curriculum Write From the Beginning and Beyond – Thinking Map framework K-12 Characteristics and goals: Personal Narrative, Imaginative Narrative, Informative, Expository (how and why), Persuasive, Response to Literature. Journal Writing: Students are given prompts and are also given free choice. 2 nd Grade concentrates on an organized paragraph with a minimum of 8 well structured sentences.

Spelling The intention of the CISD spelling plan is to expose learners to specific rules and patterns that are aligned with the expectations of grade level TEKS. GOAL: To empower learners to develop mastery of spelling rules and patterns rather than simply memorizing a list of spelling words. Evidence of mastery will be in learner’s authentic writing. List will be differentiated based on a pre-test, but all words will have the same spelling pattern that aligns to the grade level spelling standards.

Handwriting 2 nd grade will work on correct formation of printed letters using the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. We will introduce cursive strokes toward the end of the school year. Website for Parents: hwtears. com/click

2 nd Grade Technology TEKS

Important Note for PE Please send your child in light-soled tennis shoes on their PE days. Dress shoes, sandals and dark-soled tennis shoes mark up the finish. Send a handwritten note when your child can’t participate. PLEASE – no emails. Specials’ Rotation Days: Mon. – Art Tues/Thurs/Fri – PE Wed. – Music

We have a 10 minute snack/bathroom/water break around 9: 00 am every morning as we do not have lunch until 11: 30 am. Please pack a healthy snack. No peanut or peanut products allowed due to student allergies. I do not allow my students to go to the cafeteria for a snack.

Learners are responsible to bring home, return to school the next day and turn in.

Our 3 Diamond Rules: 1. Care for every one and every thing. 2. Show respect. 3. Use good manners at all times. Practicing these each day creates a safe environment conducive for learning and working together. Throughout the year, class meetings and monthly guidance lessons allow us to model and apply problem solving strategies.

Each 9 weeks, a homework calendar will be in your child’s red folder. The expection is that your learner will read 1520 minutes each day. Practice Spelling daily for 5 -10 minutes. Math will be assigned as needed. Math Mind Builders - problem solving will be in your child’s red Take Home folder. (1 -2 a day)

We are researching possible venues for our Field Trips.

Birthdays are very special days in 2 D, but not a party. IF your child wants to bring treats, it needs to be simple and easy. We eat birthday treats during snack time, 9: 00 -9: 10 a. m. Please keep in mind there are common allergies such as nuts and peanut butter.

Please sign up for any volunteer opportunities if you haven’t done so already. However, make sure you have a background check form completed before you volunteer. They will not allow you to volunteer if you bring it the day of.
