The Course �We will look at several different areas of the law: ◦ Historical Roots of Where the Law Came From ◦ Civil Law ◦ Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ◦ Criminal Law ◦ Mock Trial FSE / Exam
Bad News �You will have to take notes �You will have to read a lot �You will have to know many parts of the law thoroughly �I will be here ALL year �You will have to write quizzes and tests �There will be an FSE and Final Exam �YOU WILL LEARN A LOT!
Good News �My class is pretty easy if you do what I tell you to �All the test questions come directly from your class notes �Showing up everyday definitely increases your chances of doing well �We will debate a lot �We talk about interesting stuff like weird cases and funny cases �YOU WILL LEARN A LOT!
Classroom �Treat everyone with respect ◦ Respect is given automatically until it is lost �Listen with an open mind �Be prepared �If you have a problem come see ME first �Finally. . HAVE FUN!!! Laugh, joke, smile, when appropriate �Let’s have a great year
What do you know about the law? �Take out a sheet of paper, in the center write the word LAW. Draw a cloud or bubble around it. �Write down as many words you think can relate to the word law. �Class examples on the board �Hand in to Mr. Grassi
When The Law Works Well �Read the case half way through to the class (end of first column to “Here are the facts”) �What is reasonable? Should this lady have received the money she was given? Why or why not? �Read the rest of the case. . . has your opinion changed? Why or why
Lady Falls in Fountain. . . and Files Lawsuit �Watch the following video (keep your laughter to a minimum) �What do you think? Does she have a case? �What could she sue for? �What if she did get hurt, ex. Broke her arm. Does this change
The Whistle Goes WOOOOO! �What about in this situation? Are laws being broken? �What types of laws do you think may apply in this situation?
Are All Laws the Same? �What about in different countries? Do they have different laws than us? �Watch this video and see what American laws exist that you wouldn’t expect. �Where do laws like this come from and why do we have them? �What about the No Smoking Law? Do you think people back in the day would have thought that on is weird?
