Welcome to Be. Ready Student Launch Presentation
Let’s think about the future for a minute Put your hands up if after school… • You want to attend university • You want to go to college to study further • You want to do an apprenticeship • You want to go into the workplace • You aren’t sure yet (it’s okay!)
What do all these destinations have in common? You need to develop your ‘soft skills’ to succeed. These include: • Communication • Resilience • Leadership • Confidence • Assertiveness • Negotiating • Networking Developing these skills is important in helping you to Be. Ready for your next step in life.
What are ‘soft skills’…? The Collins English Dictionary defines the term ‘soft skills’ as: “Desirable qualities for employment that do not depend on acquired knowledge: they include common sense, the ability to deal with people, and a positive flexible attitude. ” These can be learned and developed by anyone just like any other skill. They’re different to the ‘hard skills’ you may achieve at school such as your qualifications (GCSEs, A levels, BTECS, etc. ) as they instead focus on emotional intelligence, social etiquette and other reasoning qualities.
…and why are they so important? • In the world of work, your ‘hard skills’ are not as valuable without having developed your soft skills too. These skills are the future of employment. • This is because employers will also be looking at how you’ve developed these ‘soft skills’ and will want examples. • Having developed these skills will give you something extra to put on your CV and applications, talk about in interviews and will help you stand out from the other candidates!
Don’t just take our word for it… More than half of businesses (57%) said a lack of soft skills, such as communication and team working, were reasons why young people are not ‘work ready’ 8 out of 10 school leavers ‘lack essential business skills’ Due to fears around the work readiness of young people, more than a quarter of firms (27%) said they have not recruited a young person (aged between 16 and 24) in the last year
…take his word for it! “Employability skills are vital, having that edge is so important as the recruitment market is incredibly competitive” – Dan Richards, Recruitment Leader, EY
