Introduction Meryl Hewitt • Third year teaching! • Born and raised in Waverly, New York. • Graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Childhood Education from Buffalo State College. Along with a Masters Degree in Literacy Education from Syracuse University. • I enjoy cooking, hiking, sports, and spending time with my friends and family. 2
Attendance • It is important that students attend school regularly. • If your child is going to be absent for an extended amount of time, please let me or the attendance secretary know. You can also email at DIS-Absentee@lcps. org. • The number of days absent will be the number of days allowed to make up the missed assignments. • Please ensure that your child is in the building by 7: 50 or they will be considered tardy. 3

Behavior Management System • In 5 th grade, students will earn classroom incentives. These are based upon students meeting behavioral and academic expectations. • Discovery is a PBIS school (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports). • As the quarter progresses and students are adjusting to their routines, we will introduce the Fun Friday classroom incentive. 9

What are your child’s responsibilities? • Students should complete homework assignments every night as neatly and correctly as they can. • All assignments should be completed in pencil, unless assigned otherwise. • All work should be completed and turned in by the due date. • They MUST utilize their agenda to record assignments, tests, projects, etc. • Come to school with an open mind and positive attitude! 12
Homework Policy • Students are expected to read for twenty minutes and practice math facts every night. • Homework should not take more than 45 -60 minutes to complete (exceptions may occur). This includes 20 minutes of reading each night! 13
Homework Alerts • Students will receive a homework alert for missed homework assignments. 1 Alert = Verbal Warning, everyone makes mistakes! 2 Alerts = $1 Debit for each assignment missed and have to finish their homework that evening. 3 Alerts = $2 Debit for each assignment missed and have to finish their homework during lunch in the classroom. 14
Terrific Tuesdays • Beginning in October, fifth graders will be able to stay after school on Tuesdays for extra help with schoolwork or homework. • They will need a signed note each time they come stating who will pick them up. • This runs from 2: 45 -3: 30. Please be here promptly at 3: 30 to pick up your child. • There will be at least one 5 th grade teacher there to assist the students. 15

Empowering All Students to Make Meaningful Contributions to the World Personalized Learning is dynamically tailoring learning experiences to students’ strengths, needs and/or interests. The outcome of learning at LCPS is a student who is a knowledgeable, critical thinker, communicator, collaborator, creator and contributor. These traits allow that student to make meaningful contributions to the world.

BYOT Beginning in 2016, Discovery Elementary will implement BYOT, Bring Your Own Technology, which encourages students to bring their personal technology tools to school for learning. As students utilize their personal technology devices in school, they can learn new ways to use them for collaborating and interacting with their teachers and each other to research information, solve complex problems, create original products, and publish their work. BYOT supports One to the World. Informational BYOT Nights October 4 th - 5: 30 pm October 12 th - 5: 30 pm
Standards of Learning • Reading, Math and Science SOL assessments are in May. • Science will consist of 4 th and 5 th grade concepts. • SOL changed in the state of Virginia: No writing SOL in 5 th Grade. 21

Quizzes & Tests • Dates for quizzes and tests will be highlighted in their agenda, and posted on their One. Notebook account. • Students will receive study guides at least one week prior to the test. It is IMPORTANT for them to use them as study tools for quizzes and tests, but not as the sole source. (Students are expected to take notes, participate in class, and seek help when needed). 27
Grading Policies & Procedures • Students will receive assignments throughout the week. Be sure to check your child’s Thursday Folder and Parent. Vue. Progress Indicators: 4 = Exceeds Standard 3 = Meets Standard 2 = Progressing Toward Standard 1 = Below Standard • Students will be receiving effort grades in all subject areas, including specials. O = Outstanding S = Satisfactory N = Needs Improvement 28
Snack • This year our lunch is at 12: 2512: 55. Students are more than welcome to bring in a snack everyday to enjoy during our Reading workshop. • Preferably healthy of course. Fresh fruit, granola bars, and cheese and crackers are some suggestions. Students are also encouraged to bring bottled water. • Due to many students having nut allergies, we ask that you try to avoid any items that contain nuts.
