WELCOME TO 6 TH GRADE The nuts and bolts of how our class runs
Uniforms Students are expected to be in full uniform at all times and only uniforms that are approved by the uniform code. No out-of-uniform sweatshirts may be worn in class. On PE day, students may remain in their PE uniform for the period remaining after class before dismissal. Should your student wear an unapproved item, we will send them home with a blue slip.
Birthdays We are always happy to celebrate your child’s birthday. If your child would like to bring in treats to share with their homeroom, each class has 29 students. Your child may bring in something simple like cupcakes, brownies, or cookies. Napkins and plates are also nice to have, but not necessary.
Holiday Parties We love to celebrate holidays in Sixth Grade as a combined, whole group. Room parents coordinate the who and the what. We open the door between our classrooms and students are able to mingle between the two rooms. Holidays we celebrate with parties in Sixth Grade are: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.
Snack Time We have a working snack time in Sixth Grade.
Lockers Lockers have been assigned in number order. Textbooks inside the locker have the same number. Crates for backpacks at the windows are for your backpacks and are also assigned by number order. Do not make changes without permission.
Desk Assignments Desks are assigned to both a 6 A student and a 6 B student. We will be moving desks throughout the year, about once a quarter unless needed more often. You are expected to take care of school property. Do not write on your desk or vandalize it in any other way. Do not tear off or destroy your name tag or the 6 B student’s.
Procedure Infractions Depending on the infraction and the severity of it, you will be given a warning, serve a lunch/recess detention, or be sent to the office. Disruptive, disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. The more harmony we have in the classroom, the more fun we can have with activities.
Technology in the Classroom No personal phones allowed. They will be confiscated and given to Mr. Cantu for your parents to retrieve. When using the school Chromebooks, you must follow the policy you agree to and sign. Should you not follow the policy, your privileges will be taken away and you will do things using paper and pencil while your classmates use the technology.
BAND Band is Tuesdays and Thursdays during normal lunch/recess time. Band students will be allowed to start eating around 11: 30 to ensure enough time to complete your lunch prior to walking over to the Parish Hall. Eating early is disruptive to class, but we cannot stop class for social time. Students are expected to get and eat lunches with as little disruption as possible.
Patrols Patrols are assigned weekly. Patrols serve both morning and afternoon. Morning subs must be at school ready to start at 8: 05. If you cannot do your patrol duty, it is YOUR responsibility to find a sub. Finding a sub is easier if you do not wait till last minute. Each student will be expected to serve as a patrol approximately three times (3 weeks) during the school year. Patrols leave at 2: 50 to set up the cones and be prepared for afternoon pick-up.
Homework & Planners Homework is posted daily on the board for all to see. It is the student’s responsibility to fill in his/her daily planner with the nightly assignments. We teachers do our best to post assignments daily on the Sixth Grade page on the school website. Sometimes we have additional information on the board in class. The patrol schedule can be found on the th
Getting Help There may be times when your child needs extra help. We are always willing to work them, but we must ask that they seek help in a timely manner. In addition to Mr. Johnson & Mrs. Batchelor, Mr. Pennington is available to help with math after school several afternoons a week. If your child needs extra math help and would like to work with Mr. Pennington, we can help set that up for you. Library time is part study hall and an excellent time for students to get extra help.
Schedule Your student has a copy of their weekly schedule. On the schedule, they will find the specials for each day.
Extra Activities In Sixth Grade, we cover a lot of fascinating topics that tie into our immediate area. To enhance what we do in the classroom, we try to include field trips and other hands-on experiences. One example is the field trip to the Museum of Flight where students will be able to work in a Space simulation activity. Camp: We will do Outdoor Education in March. More details will come as it gets closer. Mrs. Jin will reach out to families about the financial portion of this trip. Enchanted Village: Mr. Cantu rewards patrols each year with a trip to Enchanted Village in the last few days
