Reading Continued / / / In 3 rd grade, the focus moves away from phonics, letter sounds, and decoding strategies. Reading instruction focuses on comprehension skills such as analyzing author’s purpose, understanding characters, etc. The main goal of reading instruction is to help kids develop a complex tool box of skills that they can apply to understand a variety of fiction & non-fiction texts. Students are constantly asked to make an inference/draw a conclusion based on what they read & support it with evidence (ex: What is the message of this story? Why do you think so? ) Students are being asked to analyze why authors do certain things (reading as writers). For example, they might be asked, “Why did the author use italics in this paragraph? Explain with evidence from the story how you formed your conclusion. ” Reading Instruction included a mini-lessons, small group instruction, one-on-one conferencing, and reader’s workshop.

Grammar and Writing /Recognize the meaning of common idioms and figurative phrases and incorporate them into their writing /Recognize synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs /Infer the meaning from common root words, common prefixes and common suffixes

Classroom Management / / Whole group – Compliment Potato Individual: / Positive- good behavior Eagle Eye Ticket and positive praise / Negative- Change color with loss of 5 minute recess with one color change and 10 minute recess loss for students on red, notes home in agenda, loss of privileges, logical consequences The focus is on the positive!!

Gifted I will be serving the gifted students since I am gifted certified. Students will be challenged in whole group instruction as well as small group instruction. • Across all curriculum, students are asked to synthesize information, think on a deeper level, ask questions, draw conclusions, and support complex inferences with evidence. It is not about memorizing facts, but about learning critical thinking skills & applying them to different content areas. •
