A LITTLE STUY TRIVIA… • Stuyvesant High School opened in 1904 with a class

A LITTLE STUY TRIVIA… • Stuyvesant High School opened in 1904 with a class of 155 students, all boys, as a manual training school in professions such as engineering, medicine, and other trades & crafts. • The first incoming class that invited female students wasn’t until the Fall of 1968. • The first girls sports team at Stuyvesant was Girls Fencing in 1972. • The first female Editor in Chief of The Spectator was Kathryn Parks, class of 1972. • Four graduates of Stuyvesant went on to become Nobel Laureates! • 21 of our illustrious teaching staff have earned Doctorates in their field! • The first issue of The Spectator newspaper came out in 1915. • There are exactly 38 steps up to the Tri. Be. Ca Bridge that crosses West Street to the entrance of Stuy. • What’s with all those glass blocks in the walls? • Mnemonics was designed by public artists, Kristen Jones and Andrew Ginzel. 400 glass blocks scattered from the basement to the 10 th floor represent the first 88 years of Stuyvesant in the 15 th street building and various samples from around the world including a piece of the Great Wall of China to chemical compounds. Empty blocks were provided to represent the following 88 years of Stuyvesant's history stretching to the year 2080.
