Home Language Survey PURPOSE: To identify if student is an English Language Learner. Parents answer these questions: 1. Which language did your son or daughter learn when he or she first began to talk? 2. Which language does your son or daughter most frequently use at home? 3. Which language do you use most frequently to speak to your son or daughter? 3. 4. Name the language most often spoken by the adults at home.

English Language Development Program

Goals of the E L D Program • Achieve English Proficiency as effectively and rapidly as possible – Proficiency is defined as a level of English usage that demonstrates native-like competence in the areas and understanding, speaking, reading and writing. • Achieve Academic Success – English learners meet state standards for academic achievement • Develop a positive self-image and an understanding and respect for cultural diversity

The ELD Program is… • An incorporated academic program (like English Language Arts and Math) that is taught by the classroom teacher for a prescribed amount of time during the school day. • Materials and teaching techniques specifically designed to meet the needs of children who are becoming fluent in English.

What can you do help your child attain Fluent English Proficiency? • Read together nightly, discuss the stories, ask questions that can’t be answered with one word. • Encourage your child to keep a writing journal • Practice math facts and play math games. • Visit the library and check out books. • Talk to your children about what they are learning in school. • At conference time, ask the teacher for more ideas. • Model good learning behaviors. Be involved in your child’s education!

ELPAC Testing (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California) • Initial ELPAC: Administered in August • Annual ELPAC: Administered in February and March

English Learner Advisory Committee PURPOSE: • Advise the principal and school staff on programs and services for English Language Learners • Advise the School Site Council on the development of the Single School Plan for Student Achievement

#3 ANNUAL LANGUAGE CENSUS (R-30) continued… The R 30 organizes information into 5 parts: 1. The number of ELs and fluent-English-proficient students (FEPs) 2. The type of instructional setting and instructional services for ELs 3. The total for ELs reclassified since the previous R 30 4. The number of parental waivers from English language classrooms 5. Teachers and bilingual paraprofessionals who provide EL instructional services 16

ELAC Officers ELAC shall include the following officers: 1. Chairperson to organize, convene, and lead meetings of the council; attends DELAC and SSC meetings 2. Vice-Chairperson to serve in the absence of the chairperson 3. Secretary to record events and actions taken at council meetings 18
