Slide 12 Achieving your Btec • Your course may be a mixture of internally assessed coursework, externally assessed examinations or placement requirements • To gain achievement you must : • Pass = All Pass criteria achieved • Merit = All Pass and all Merit criteria achieved • Distinction = All Pass, all Merit and all Distinction criteria achieved • If you do not complete work, units or pass exams your grade will be unclassified
Assessment and the Rules • Most of the units you study will be marked by our staff but 33% of the course is set and marked by the exam board • For units that we mark you must follow the following rules
How many times can you submit assignments? • Only one submission is usually allowed for each assignment, so it is • • • important to get it right the first time Under certain circumstances it may be appropriate for your teacher to authorise one opportunity for you to resubmit evidence to meet assessment criteria targeted by an assignment. These are: If you have met initial deadlines set in the assignment, or has met an agreed deadline extension (issued in exceptional circumstances) Your teacher judges that you will be able to provide improved evidence without further guidance The teacher has authenticated the work you have submitted and the work is accompanied by a signed and dated declaration of authenticity by you However you are allowed a ‘dry run/classroom assessment’ at each assignment, this will be explained in more detail when we satrt coursework
Plagiarism • Plagiarism is the dishonest presentation of the work of others as if it were your own • Copying directly from any source and not referencing appropriately will be considered plagiarism • Work submitted by you must be in their own words with exception only for references in the text which must be acknowledged both in references and bibliography • You will be issued with our 6 th form plagiarism policy as part of your induction
Assessment through operative verbs • Each piece of your work will need to apply to an operative verb. These are command verbs that you must address in your work. • The following slides give you an idea of common operative verbs used in Btec • As you progress through Pass to Merit to Distinction the verbs progress by requiring higher order thinking • For example at Pass level you may be asked to merely describe something, at Merit you may be required to justify something, while to achieve Distinction you may need to analyse or evaluate something
Operative verb tasks • You will all be given one of the following operative verbs and you have to use it in the scenario you are given. • Describe • Explain • List • Summarise • Analyse • Compare/contrast • Demonstrate • Explain in detail • Justify • Comment critically • Draw conclusions • Evaluate

Best advice • After delivering Btec courses for many years as a teachers, markers • • • and verifiers our advice is simple Start your coursework as soon as it is set, sometimes particularly on Btec National (A level equivalents) you have long deadlines. Do not leave it to the last minute Meet your deadlines Note from the beginning that work for the higher grades demands more independent study, research and higher analytical skills, so to achieve a higher grade overall you need to be prepared to work hard Do not get behind as work really builds up with Btecs Ask for help if you are struggling Finally good luck!
