BIBLE READING PSALMS 90: 9 -12
Contribution 1 Corinthians 16: 1 -2 NKJV[1] Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: [2] On the first day of the week each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.
As we enter into a new year, many thoughts come to our mind. What will the next year bring? What plans should I have for the next year? What should my goals be? In my career? For my family? Will I go on vacation, or buy a new car? What are my personal goals regarding my spiritual growth? These are some examples of valid thoughts and hopes for the future that any Christian would have. It is only natural for us to think about the future and to have hopes, ambitions and desires for our future. But there is something that must always be in the back of our minds, that we should always be conscious of, and should always influence our decisions that we make in this life.
OUR TIME IS LIMITED! Time is a constant in this life that we cannot control. Time is something that once gone, cannot be gained back. We are about to be blessed by God with another year. ust heavily consider the value of this newly acquired extension o consideration when we realize just how short our lives really are
Psalm 90: 9 -12 For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
ntering 2020, we must ask ourselves What is the value of time to a Christian? Given the constraint of time on our lives, how important is the use of time to a Christian? We live in an era where time is wasted away like in no other era. keep us away from our purpose as God’s creation. And in turn, devalu To say that something has value, is to say that we get something out of it.
Time gives us opportunity Wouldn’t you say that opportunities are valuable ? s us, is proof that He is patient with us and gives us opportunity to repent, to grow spiritua God gives those in this world opportunity to come to Him for salvation.
Time gives us structure Our use of time determines our spiritual structure, and our character. s necessary to develop our spiritual structure and character, our works will be burned up and our t Have you taken the time to lay this solid foundation? Have you taken the time to build strong walls and pillars, so that your roof will not collapse on you? Will you use this new year to build a stone castle or a house of cards?
Time teaches us discipline It takes a long time to learn from discipline. Are we going to take the time we need next year to learn and practice self discipline?
ntering 2020, we must ask ourselves What is it that we are supposed to do with our time? We all spend our time, but what is it that we are purchasing? Are we getting a good deal? Are we getting ripped off?
We are to spend our time wisely Ephesians 5: 15 -21 hat you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the day ing to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody i If we don’t spend enough time on Godly things, we will be over taken by worldly things. When do you make time for spiritual things?
We are to spend the right amount of time on the right things
ntering 2020, we must ask ourselves Why is it so important for us to know that our time is limited? We are all aware of the fact that we are only going to live for so long Why do we procrastinate? Why do we keep waiting for another year to start making improvements in our spiritual life? God’s word is telling us that there might not be another year!
It should cause us to care less about the vain things of this world! 1 John 2: 15 -17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. We all have responsibilities and daily lives to live, and it consumes much of our time. But where does our heart lay? Are we living FOR the things of this world? Are we giving all of our time to this world?
It should cause us to care more about seeking heavenly things above Colossians 3: 1 -2 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Luke 21: 34 -36 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man. ”
A lesson to learn from Hezekiah
Hezekiah’s attitude
What if God told you that your time was up? Regret your wasted time? Weeping bitterly? Beg for more time? Be ready? Thankful for the time you had?
The spending of our years is like the telling of a tale. A year, when it past, is like a tale when it is told. Some of our years are a pleasant story, others as a tragical one, most mixed, but all short and transient: that which was long in the doing may be told in a short time. Our years, when they are gone, can no more be recalled than the word that we have spoken can. The loss and waste of our time, which are our fault and folly, may be thus complained of: we should spend or years like the despatch of business, with care and industry; but, alas! we do spend them like the telling of a tale, idle, and to little purpose, carelessly, and without regard. Every year passed as a tale that is told; but what was the number of them? As they were vain, so they were few. - Matthew Henry commentary
