COMMUNITY EDUCATION • WHO ARE WE? • WHERE ARE WE? • WHAT DO WE DO? Community Education as stated in KRS 160. 157, “Community Education means a program in which a public building, including a public elementary or secondary school, is used as a community center operated by a local education agency in cooperation with other groups in the community, community organizations, and local governmental agencies to provide educational, recreational, cultural, health care, and other related community services in accordance with the needs, interests, and concerns of the community. ”

COMMUNITY EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY Community Education is a collaborative approach to education that has concern for all aspects of living in a community. The community education concept recognizes learning as a lifelong process and thus seeks to promote education opportunities for people of all ages. We believe the community education concept offers a creative approach to individual and community development. We believe effective community education programs result from collaboration among all segments of the community. We affirm the belief that citizens have the right and obligation to be involved in the decision-making processes that affect their well-being. We further believe that community education at its best is: People helping people, working together to take deliberate, positive action toward making society a better place in which to live.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION COMPONENTS Community Education in Kentucky operates programs with these five components as the fundamental building blocks for development/sustainability. WHO ARE WE? • We are 96 programs in operation across the Commonwealth • We are 10 regions covering the entire state of Kentucky • We are in Independent school settings, County Schools or a combination of both • We are collaborative partners in every facet of the education process • We are the link between school and communities resources

WHAT WE DO? • We operate programs with no state allocated monies other than a $20, 000 grant with a 25% match by the host district to cover the salary of the director which is unlike any other program. • The state allocates 2. 1 million dollars in funding and from that we generate a Return on Investment of $9. 65 million in grants and fees for services. • State-wide in 2010 -2011 Community Education employed 184 full time and 1, 169 part-time contractual positions through program operations. • Our program director’s meet with community business leaders to establish workshops, classes or special sessions for all citizens of the areas served. • They meet with civic groups/organizations (Chambers of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. ), community based service organizations, fiscal courts, city/county officials, school based programs (FRYSC, FCCLA, FBLA, FFA and county extension agents, Career & Technical Colleges/Universities and we work with educators on a daily basis to host project/events for youth enrichment. • Participate in all community events as a collaborative effort: County Fairs, Community Celebrations, Veteran’s Day, Public Events, and any event in which Community Education can be fully promoted. • Serve as a representative on the school districts CSIP/CDIP and Administrative Teams to keep informed of all area happenings. • Host an annual Legislative Luncheon through the Kentucky Community Education Association for all directors to meet face-to-face with their respected legislators.
