Welcome • History: Ø Mid-1990’s: Muon to Electron Conversion Experiment (MECO) proposed for the AGS at Brookhaven Ø 2001: MECO technical design report submitted, followed by several very favorable reviews. Ø 2005: Brookhaven cancels the RSVP program, which included MECO and KOPIO, primarily for financial reasons. Ø 2006: Discussions begin at Fermilab about possible ways to mount a similar experiment here Ø 9/06: Fermilab hosts workshop to investigate this possibility in more detail, including many people formerly involved in MECO. Ø 6/1/07: At the request of the Fermilab Director, an Expression of Interest is submitted to the Fermilab Steering Committee, representing the beginning of the “mu 2 e” Collaboration • Signed by 50 people from 11 institutions Ø 8/1/07: First collaboration meeting Mu 2 e Collaboration Meeting, August 1 st, 2007 E Prebys 1

Current “Climate” • The present collider program will end when the LHC begins to run in earnest Ø 2009 or possibly 2010 • At that point, the primary focus of the lab will be the neutrino program Ø Continuation of Nu. MI/MINOS Ø Series of upgrades to run NOv. A at the 700 k. W level (very marginal for the NOv. A physics program) • “Plan A” is still to aggressively pursue the ILC with all remaining resources. • Remarks from Ray Orbach et al make it clear we need to consider a Plan B Ø Deputy Director Young-Kee Kim is currently running a steering to committee to robust mid-term physics program in the event the ILC is delayed or canceled. Where does mu 2 e fit in? • A method has been identified to deliver the beam structure needed by a “MECO-type” muon to electron conversion experiment: Ø See “boomerang scheme” talk by Popovic Ø Modest when compared to the cost of the experiment Ø Fully compatible with NOv. A running • This would provide an exciting physics opportunity for the lab in the next decade. • Although the steering committee has not made its official recommendation, it will likely be for an 8 Ge. V proton linac based on ILC technology (see “Project X” talk) Ø Will boost NOv. A to the 2 MW level Ø Could provide a significant increase in protons for this experiment. Opinion Time • The Director has been extremely supportive of this effort Ø Very excited about the physics Ø Feels it could fit well into the lab’s plans unless the ILC is fast-tracked. • I think there’s a good possibility this could become a reality. Goals for this meeting • Formalize the collaboration structure and approve our charter (see Kumar’s talk) • Develop a roadmap to produce a Letter of Intent Ø Would like to get it on the radar for the fall PAC (Nov 13) Ø -> Complete by end of September at the latest • Get some feel for level and areas of commitment for collaborators and their institutions. • Get to know each other better. • Encourage people to go forth and spread the word Mu 2 e Collaboration Meeting, August 1 st, 2007 E Prebys 5

Some Details • This room is booked from 12 -1 and again at 5, so we need to try to stick to the schedule • Please try to get your talk to me in advance, either by mail, memory stick, or upload it yourself • Wireless is available, and using it should be transparent. Public terminals also available on the ground floor, across from the Credit Union, as well as a few other locations. • Ran into a snag setting up coffee breaks, so we’re on our own Ø Bagels will be provided for the morning Ø Coffee available in the cafeteria • Dinner Ø At Milorad Popovic’s home, following the afternoon session. Ø Maps will be available. Ø People are encouraged to share rides. Mu 2 e Collaboration Meeting, August 1 st, 2007 E Prebys 6
