Freudian Theory: 3 Parts of the Mind • Id: unconscious instincts and desires – Based on the pleasure principle – EAT, SLEEP AND PEE RIIIGHT NOOOW! – NO THINKING – JUST DOING

Freudian Theory: 3 Parts of the Mind • Superego: Morality, or sense of right and wrong. – Makes you feel guilty when you do something bad

Freudian Theory: 3 Parts of the Mind • Ego: Balances the Id and the ego with reality – Based on the reality principle: – Sometimes being selfish and impulsive can hurt us in the long run – Sometimes we need to address our needs and forget our guilt – COMMON CONFUSION – EGO IS NOT “YOU”

The Situation • ID: Stuff the food in your pocket into your face, go to the bathroom without asking and fall asleep in the hall. • SUPEREGO: It is only right to wait until the end of class. We need to learn so we can succeed! • EGO: Realistically, I can use one of my bathroom passes now and splash some water in my face in the bathroom to wake up. I’ll eat when I get home
