Day-to-Day at SWMS • • • School starts at 8: 15 and ends at 3: 25 Students begin their day in AA or homeroom. They will stay in this class for Core 1(1 st period/1 st block) Announcements are made during AA time and breakfast is served during AA time 1 or 2 bathroom breaks a day with class, but can go when needed alone with teacher permission Students eat lunch during their 2 nd core class. Lunch is 25 minutes.
Day-to-Day at SWMS • 6 th grade students attend CORE classes (MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES and LANGUAGE ARTS) first then move to ENCORE classes. • Encore classes begin at 1: 10 until dismissal. Band/Orchestra/Chorus Art PE/Health Nutrition & Wellness Computer Science Careers & Employment Technology Keyboarding and Word Processing Intro to Spanish
What are Teams? Each grade level consist of teams. Teams promote experiences that support students academically and socially. There are 4 teams in 6 th Grade; Typically one teacher will teach one subject: Math, Lang. Arts, Science or Social Studies
Arts Education Band 6/Orchestra 6 -students receive instruction on fundamentals through group and individualized instruction. The groups are involved with performances throughout the school year. Chorus 6 -students begin a m ore in-depth study of vocal technique and choral literature. Groups are involved in performance-related activities throughout the year. Art 6 -students interested in exploring basic art techniques and media. Elements and principles of design are emphasized along with opportunities for enhancing critical thinking and writing skills.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Exploring Technology 6 -students will investigate how products can be improved and invented based on the current need to solve problems. Through engaging activities and hands-on projects students focus on understanding system design and technologies. Keyboarding and Word Processing 6 -students gain the knowledge to use computers efficiently. Students will learn the touch method of keying using all ten fingers. Exploring Nutrition and Wellness-students will learn more about making healthy food choices, understand the basic foundations of good nutrition and develop knowledge and skills using classroom kitchens as they work to prepare healthy foods. Careers & Employment- students will learn about the world of work. They will identify careers of interest. Computer Science- Students will create computer programs and they will develop interactive games.
World Languages and PE/Health • Intro to Spanish: Introduction to basic Spanish vocabulary and structure; develop awareness of Spanish language patterns and sounds. • Health/PE: Focuses on developing skills, habits and attitudes to maintain a healthy lifestyle and applying lessons learned to physical fitness. This class is required every year. • Team Sports: This course teaches students about different genres of Sports. Emphasis is placed on basic skill development and team building skills.
Time Management Study Habits • Students normally have 6 classes per day… • 6 different expectations… • 6 different homework assignments … • Responsibility of managing time, at school and home… Oh My Goodness! How do I do that? Teachers begin on day one to teach them good time management and study skills.
Agendas are an important planning tool for students. They write down: • Homework • Due dates for projects • Tutoring dates for after school • Events occurring after school or at night • Field Trip information • Teachers and/or parents may communicate by writing notes in the agenda to be answered by either.
ATTENDANCE We encourage students to be present and punctual EVERY day! The benefit of social exposure and being taught different subjects in school will help students develop skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. It is very critical to know the importance of regular school attendance. Creating good attendance habits help students succeed at school. Students are limited to (6) absences per semester or (12) absences per school year.
