Meet the Moderator: Rocío Fierro-Perez Rocio is a senior pursuing her Bachelor of Arts

Meet the Moderator: Rocío Fierro-Perez Rocio is a senior pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Communication and serves as a Senator at Large for the UTEP Student Government Association. She is a proud member of the UTEP Queer Student Alliance and French Club. She has held numerous leadership positions such as UTEP SGA Senate Majority Leader, Document Review Committee Chair and EPCC Student Government Association President for two consecutive terms. Aside from her school activities she was honored to be a Hispanic Heritage Foundation scholarship recipient, El Paso Sun City Pride Scholar, and named Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Rocio is currently a legislative intern at The Office of Senator Jose Rodriguez and aspires to one day hold a political office in hopes of helping provide quality education for all, accountability and transparency in leadership and engage communities through courageous conversations.

Meet the Panelists: Kristen Ahumada Kristen is a Senior majoring in biological sciences with a concentration in biomedical sciences and serves as the President of the UTEP Student Government Association for the 2017 -2018 administration. Upon graduation Kristen aspires to go to medical school and pursue a specialty in pediatrics to ultimately serve the underprivileged El Paso Del Norte community. Aside from being student body President she has held previous leadership positions such as: President for UTEP’s University Honors Council, a Teacher’s Assistant for the Entering Student Program, a undergraduate assistant for the University Honors Program, and has served as a Senatorat-Large in SGA. Kristen takes an active role in her university and wants to do so in her community to establish a united front to help reshape policy for the betterment of our region.

Meet the Panelists: Andrea Porras A proud native of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Andrea D. Porras Portillo migrated to El Paso, Texas in 2011 in pursuit of quality education, opportunity, and a better future. Her experiences as a bicultural, bilingual, and bisexual woman taught her never to take an opportunity or leadership or civic engagement for granted. Andrea is currently serving as the Student Government President at El Paso Community College. She is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Psychology and Speech Communication and hopes to eventually earn a Law degree. With her experience as an intern in the Office of Senator Jose Rodriguez, SGA, and Voto Latino, Andrea will continue working to advocate for immigrant rights, gender equality, and social/political mobilization upon graduation.

Meet the Panelists: Samantha Ortega was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. She currently studies at El Paso High School where she is passionate about her studies and her musical career. With her leadership role in the Gay-Straight Alliance Club, as well as her participation in her debate and mock trial team, she foresees a career in activism. She is off to a solid start having received a paid internship with West Fund, a local nonprofit advocating for abortion access, and attending a national convening in Chicago with activists from groups such as Trans Queer Pueblo, Immigrant Youth Coalition, the Asian American Organizing Project and more. Her life revolves around volunteer work ranging from teaching young children how to play instruments to helping out in any way to promote women's rights.

Meet the Panelists: Emilio Posada • Emilio is a senior at Burges High School. He is the debate Captain, senior track and cross country runner, and chair member of student council. As a member of student council and someone who holds bonds between friends and the community very seriously, Emilio believes it’s important to discuss threats and concerns within our community.

A concealed handgun as a handgun, the presence of which is not openly discernible to the ordinary observation of a reasonable person. Campus Carry- the right to carry concealed handguns on campus with a Texas handgun licenses are available to any person who is at least 21 (or 18, if a member of the military).
