What is UIL POETRY? Oral interpretation involves the performing of literature aloud to communicate meaning to an audience. This literature is to be performed standing up while reading and performing the literature from a small black binder. In the category of Poetry, the literature performed has to be poetry.

How to Run a UIL Poetry Event ORDER OF EVENTS ● ● ● ● Roll Call Draw for Speaker Order Draw for Category Prelims Semis Finals (Should be paneled if possible) Awards
How to Run a UIL Poetry Event Things to Remember ● Post-It’s are awesome for sectioning! ● Audience members are always encouraged to watch rounds. ● Make sure time keepers introduce themselves before the round starts and state all the rules to everyone in the room. ○ No Cell Phones ○ Show all Time Cards and or Hand Signs ○ Turn in Signed Time Ballots ○ Use Stop Watches and NOT CELL PHONES ● Make sure judges sign every ballot and master ballot. ● Do not return ballots until the round is completely over. ● Make sure coaches know there is a 10 minute verification period to verify final results before they are announced.

How to Teach UIL POETRY You can teach UIL Poetry in your class and break it down for various assignments and grades. ● Choosing one Category (A or B) ● Checking out a book ● Making a copy of the pages they are going to cut their piece from ● Turn in a rough cutting of their piece ● Turn in a final cutting of their piece ● Turn in a copy of their introduction ● Type out final piece in correct format ● Saving their final formatted piece on the computer in a student file ● Emailing the final formatted piece to the coaches/team email ● Printing the final formatted piece ● Neatly putting the final formated piece in slick sheets in their black binder ● Turning in final Black Binder ● Repeat assignments for other category
