SDS – 493 COMBINES • TWO SEMESTER DIDECTIC (Lectures) & • TWO semester Clinics
LEARNING OUTCOMES • Perform a comprehensive examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment for a variety of prosthodontic cases. • Demonstrate sound basic knowledge of the procedures and materials used in the construction of fixed and removable dental prosthesis. • Demonstrate the ability to execute clinical procedures related to the treatment of fixed, removable and combined dental cases, applying the fundamental principles of fixed , removable and implant prosthodontics. • Properly coordinate between technical procedures and knowledge in all clinical procedures.
LEARNING OUTCOMES • Recognize the importance of shortened dental arch and implant- retained overdenture as a standard of care for the treatment of completely edentulous patients. • Use all available resources to search for information pertinent to the principles, theories and techniques used to treat patients with comprehensive dental cases. • The students should be able to communicate and interact professionally and effectively with patients, colleagues and members of the health care team. • Demonstrate a good rapport with dental technicians for the fabrication of various dental prosthesis. • Perform high-quality clinical and technical activities for the attainment of precise and predictable clinical outcomes.
COURSE MECHANICS • Clinical Sessions • 1 session / week (3 hours) • 15 sessions / semester (45 hours) • 30 sessions / year • However, it is part of DEN 493 so ……. • Lectures • 12 / semester • 24 lecutres for the course • Additional 3 hours per week for home study
LECTURE TOPICS – 1 ST SEMESTER • Course introduction • Prosthodontics – biologic and functional aspect of tooth loss • Pre-edentulism • Overdentures – Part I: rationale, advantages & disadvantages, indications & contraindications • Overdentures – Part II: examination, case selection, abutment selection, treatment plan • Overdentures – Part III: clinical procedures, impression techniques, abutments, post-insertion maintenance phase
LECTURE TOPICS – 1 ST SEMESTER • Surveyed crown • Attachments for RPD and Segmented Bridges • Treatment planning for implant : Diagnosis, implant treatment decision, indications and planning overview, patient selection, biomechanical consideration • Dental Implants – Part I: Clinical Procedures • Dental Implants – Part II: Clinical and Lab Procedures • Implant retained overdenture
LECTURE TOPICS - 2 ND SEMESTER • Occlusal consideration in prosthodontics • Dental Implants : Occlusal considerations for implant supported prosthesis and maintenance • Dental Implants : Implant complications and maintenance • Dental Implants : Immediate implant loading • Perio-prostho relation • Temporomandibular disorders, screening history and exam for routine dental patients
LECTURE TOPICS - 2 ND SEMESTER • Removable Occlusal Devices • Bite Raising in Prosthodontics • Wear of Teeth • Maxillofacial Prosthesis – Part III
CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS • Fixed Prosthodontics including Implants 8 units • Single Crown 1 unit • Conventional FPD 1 Number of retainers + (for pontics) • Min Prep / Resin Bonded FPD • Cast P & C 2 units (max. ) 1 unit • Prefab. P & C build up ½ (0. 5) unit • Implant Crown 1 unit
CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS • Removable Prosthodontics Arches • Each Arch Prosthesis 4 1 unit • It should be combination of CD, RPD, Overdenture with or without attachments, and implant retention. • Transitional or interim Prosthesis unit ½ (0. 5)
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT • Clinical Skills • Fulfilling minimum clinical requirements and completion of a minimum number of comprehensive cases to reflect the students’ ability to perform the procedures with precision and to integrate and apply their acquired manual skills in various clinical situations. • Daily / Procedural clinical evaluation. • 4 Practical competency examination. • Student’s self evaluation for every clinical procedure • Didactic • 2 Mid term Written Exams • Final Written Exam • OSCE
