Policy Targets for RE 6 Govt. of India has ambitious plans to increase percentage of RE in the energy mix of India’s target is to achieve 175 GW generation capacity by 2022. JNNSM targets have been revised from 20 GW to 100 GW by 2021 -22. This capacity is to be achieved through installation of 40 GW of Roof Top Solar projects and 60 GW of large ground mounted projects. India also plans to install 60 GW Wind Energy, 10 GW of Biomass power and 5 GW of Small Hydro power Maharashtra has been given target of 22, 045 MW of RE out of which solar target is 11, 926 MW.

In electricity grid, supply and demand must be matched instantaneously. Any mismatch can lead to collapse of the grid. Present grids are relatively simple system having unidirectional flow from large-scale conventional generators through transmission and distribution lines to consumers. Existing power system heavily relies on conventional power plants that have a controllable power output. Renewable Energy sources especially Wind and solar power are not controllable and thus present challenges to the operation of the power grid.

Use of appropriate correction factors on forecasted data for optimizing scheduling. Establish grid codes for incentivize generators having energy storage facility. Building and optimizing utilization of balancing reserves for taking care of varying generation. Demand side flexibility can be used as spinning reserves as well as peak reduction.
