Weight Control Semester 1
Understanding We do not practice medicine We do not believe in alternative medicine But we do believe in complementary medicine
Naturopathy is a 2, 500 year old tradition that believes philosophically that the human body can achieve perfect health if only we feed it and care for it properly. Hippocrates was the Father of naturopathy and his beliefs were: let food be thy medicine, physician heal thy self, and a medicine shall do no harm.
Ideal Weight Your ideal weight is the weight that will allow you to live a healthy life and not suffer from any disease, and also give you the energy along with the mental and physical strength you need to do everything you want to do.
Ideal Weight Changes Over An ideal weight is what you know in your heart is Time good for you, it's different for everybody, it even changes over time: Babies- Extra weight is good to help you as you grow. Midlife- Being thinner helps guarantee you’re going to live a longer healthier life. The less calories you consume the healthier you are. Later in life(70 s, 80 s, 90 s)- Extra weight helps to protect possible brittle bones.
Causes of Death
The Rule Of 49’s The rule of 49’s dictates that you cannot help somebody unless they are willing to do at least 51% of the effort. If they are not willing to put in at least half of the effort, then you have to back away, typically no one is going to change their bad habits until they are doing it for themselves.

Changing Patterns It's easy to get stuck in bad habits because certain foods or beverages (coffee and sodas) contain ingredients like caffeine and sweeteners that trigger addictions. We also have patterns triggered by convenience, social activities or perceived value. When we realize that caffeine is a drug, that convenient foods are low quality foods, and that making better choices in social situations is not that bad, we will begin to realize the benefits of hand picked

Commercial Diet You can watch any length of tv and still get your exercise in, that's right! You still get your exercise in by doing either 1, one minute workout, or 2, 30 second isometric workouts during each commercial break. Some examples of isometric workouts are: Jumping jack Pushups Dips Run in place Treadmill Skipping Jump rope Jog in place Use a rebounder Stair climber

Caloric Intake Classic Understanding The balance of calories stored and burned depends on your genetic makeup, your level of physical activity, and your resting energy expenditure (the number of calories your body burns while at rest). If you consistently burn all of the calories that you consume in the course of a day, you will maintain your weight. If you consume more energy (calories) than you expend, you will gain weight. Excess calories are stored throughout your body as fat. Your body stores this fat within specialized fat cells (adipose tissue) — either by enlarging fat cells, which are always present in the body, or by creating more of them. If you decrease your food intake and consume fewer calories than you burn up, or if you exercise more and burn up more calories, your body will reduce some of your fat stores. When this happens, fat cells shrink, along with your waistline.
Low Fat, High Caloric Fat isn’t necessarily the problem; in fact, research shows that the fat content of our diet has actually gone down since the early 1980 s. But many low-fat foods are very high in calories because they contain large amounts of sugar to improve their taste and palatability. Many low-fat foods are actually higher in calories than foods that are not low fat.
Maintaining Your Ideal Weight If you consistently burn the amount of calories you consume in the course of a day you will have no problem maintaining your ideal weight, but most people don’t. In fact, if you are not doing that you will gain weight. If you’re consuming more energy than you are expending that will lead to weight gain.

Types of Stress Emotional - Negative Thoughts Physical - Excess Weight, Exercise, & Injuries Physiological - Poor Diet & Environment
Stress Every time we are under stress it affects our hormones Stress induces a cascade of adaptive neuroendocrine responses, which classically includes secretion of cortisol and epinephrine (EPI) into the circulation from the adrenal gland
Stress In the short term, stress can shut down appetite. A structure in the brain called the hypothalamus produces a corticotropin-releasing hormone, which suppresses appetite. The brain also sends messages to the adrenal glands atop the kidneys to pump out the hormone epinephrine (also known as adrenaline). Epinephrine helps trigger the body’s fight- or-flight response, a revved-up physiological state that temporarily puts eating on hold, while we expend energy finding our next meal or dealing with a crisis. But if stress persists, it’s a different story. The adrenal glands release another hormone called cortisol, and cortisol increases appetite and may also ramp up motivation in general, including the motivation to eat. Once a stressful episode is over, cortisol levels should fall, but if the stress doesn’t go away — or if a person’s stress response gets stuck in the “on” position — cortisol may stay elevated.

Deep Sleep REM Sleep Deep Sleep (2 hours) - Repairing - Anti-aging - Rejuvenation - Growing REM Sleep
The Sleep Cycle
Hormones Involved in Deep Sleep Our biorhythms regulate our lives and circadian rhythms regulate sleep. melatonin, a hormone, controls our biorhythms and many people suffer sleep pattern disruptions due to hormone imbalances. Too little melatonin and too much cortisol is a common downward spiral. By increasing melatonin we increase deep sleep and reduce cortisol, a reverse “upward” spiral.
Sleep z Z Z Z The presence of REM sleep during the active time period may impair energy metabolism and promote obesity in humans Studies demonstrated that elevated body weight was associated with decreased nocturnal total sleep and REM sleep in humans
Sleep z Z Z Z Deep sleep triggers fat burning metabolism • You burn calories with proper deep sleep. • Without deep sleep your body will actually increase stress hormones causing it to store fat.

Tart Cherry Study No, it's not whiskey. New research from Louisiana State University finds that drinking tart cherry juice twice a day can help you sleep nearly 90 more minutes a night. Cherry juice is a natural source of the sleep-wake cycle hormone melatonin and the amino acid tryptophan, says study coauthor Frank L. Greenway, director of the outpatient research clinic at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at LSU. “Proanthocyanidins, or the ruby red pigments in tart cherry juice, contain an enzyme that reduces inflammation and decreases the breakdown of tryptophan, letting it go to work longer in your body, ” he says. Montmorency cherries are particularly high in those compounds.
The Decline of Sleep
Exercise & Stress Exercise & Running also put stress on the body and can be harmful, moderation is key. There are more benefits to speed walking then jogging or running. Anabolic vs Catabolic If you create more catabolic (breaking down) activity than you do anabolic (building up) than the exercise you do is wasted because it is more harmful than beneficial.
Depression & Emotions Studies have demonstrated that some people eat more when affected by depression, anxiety, or other emotional disorders. In turn, overweight and obesity themselves, can promote emotional disorders.
Prescription Drugs Several prescription drugs can cause weight gain as a side effect by increasing appetite or slowing metabolism. These include corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone (used for a variety of conditions to reduce inflammation); estrogen and progesterone (used in oral contraceptives); anticonvulsants such as valproic acid (Depakote, others); certain anticancer medications; and drugs such as olanzapine (Zyprexa), haloperidol (Haldol), lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid), and clozapine (Clozaril), which are used to treat psychiatric conditions. Among these drugs are insulin and glyburide (Dia. Beta and others); these are treatments for diabetes, which is common among people with weight disorders. Several antidepressants may cause patients to put on weight, including tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine (Tofranil) or desipramine (Norpramin, Pertofrane), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as paroxetine (Paxil), citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), sertraline (Zoloft), fluvoxamine (Luvox), and fluoxetine (Prozac).
Prescription Drugs According to some studies taking prescription drugs can cause you to gain 10 -15 lbs per prescription. With that extra weight you are likely to be at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure & heart disease which will result in needing to take more prescription drugs. Downward Spiral
Addiction to Food addiction is hormonal • Leptin- Leptin is the hormone that deals with being satisfied • Dopamine- Dopamine is the hormone that has to do with pleasure
Leptin Food addiction is hormonal • Leptin- Leptin is the signal that tells you that you are full and satisfied. Eating proper food causes leptin to work perfectly
Dopamine Food addiction is hormonal • Dopamine- Leptin is the signal that tells you that you are full and satisfied. Eating proper food causes leptin to work perfectly
Satisfaction vs Pleasure Signals Pleasure signals are never satisfied and always demand more of whatever you have become addicted to. Satisfaction signals tell your body you’ve had enough. Satisfaction signals can interrupt the demand signal when proper phytochemistry is applied.
The Law of 3 s 3 minutes without air = suffocation 3 days without water = dehydration 3 weeks without food = starvation
1. During the three weeks without food the body slows Survival Instinct down the metabolism 2. The body uses insulin taking whatever sugars and calories we have and maximizes them so they are held in the blood for a lot longer. 3. Any extra calories we intake beyond the minimum

Stroke Ischemic Hemorrhagic The two main types of strokes: Ischemic stroke occurs if an artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the brain becomes blocked. Blood clots often cause the blockages that lead to ischemic strokes. Ischemic is the more common of the two. This occurs if the artery in the brain leaks blood or ruptures. The pressure from the leaked blood damages blood cells. High blood pressure and aneurysms are examples of conditions that can cause hemorrhagic strokes.
High Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the measurement of how much pressure in your heart while your heart is beating. There are two ways to measure your blood pressure: 1. Systolic- Measurement when your muscles contract 2. Diastolic- Measurement between heart beats
High Blood Pressure
Ways You Can Control High Blood Pressure Eliminate unhealthy cholesterol Maintain sufficient levels of healthy cholesterol Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink Use only whole food salt, and in reasonable amounts Avoid tobacco products Cut back on caffeine Consistent exercise
