Thursday Bell-Ringer: Literary Analysis Weather Manipulation Terri Roberts It never seems to fail; some form of inclement weather spoils your wonderful outdoor plans for the weekend. Predicting the weather is not just about planning your social events. Knowing when and where deadly storms will strike saves countless lives each year. The most dangerous storms also cause billions of dollars worth of property damage. Still, even the most thorough analysis of a weather system cannot completely prevent loss. Conventional thinking is that no one can control the weather, but many countries are attempting to reverse people’s ideas of how science can fight back against Mother Nature. In the 1940 s, General Electric chemist Vincent Schaefer first discovered the principles of cloud seeding to produce rain. In cloud seeding, aircraft deliver small particles of silver iodide—or dry ice—to rain bearing clouds. These chemicals serve as the ice nuclei for water droplets inside the clouds, which would normally form around dust or similar particles released into the atmosphere. When enough droplets latch onto the ice nuclei, the water particles are heavy enough to fall as precipitation. Though meteorologists considered this a major breakthrough in understanding how rain and snow form, cloud seeding is a littleused practice. Not much evidence exists to support the idea that these clouds would not have produced precipitation naturally. Cloud seeding also does little good in regions affected by drought because rain-bearing clouds are hard to come by. Still, many nations are establishing programs to investigate various forms of weather modification. China is leading the weather control race with the Beijing Weather Modification Office. The institution employs 37, 000 workers tasked with the job of seeding clouds. The office was also instrumental in attempting to break up clouds before they reached the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The success of this program has received mixed reviews. Scientists are working on other weather programs as well. Some technologies could weaken severe hurricanes before they reach land stop tornadoes in their tracks. There also projects to develop a lightning-steering machine that could potentially harness the electrical energy produced by thunderstorms. Opponents of weather manipulation argue that the chemicals used in cloud seeding could have a negative impact on the environment. Though many proponents argue that the amount of silver iodide used is negligible, critics feel that there have not been enough studies into how accumulation of the chemical over time could affect plants, animals, and humans on the ground. Many people also worry that weather manipulation could eventually evolve into a form of eco-warfare that would allow countries to harness the power of weather during battle. Despite the controversy, research into the science of controlling the weather continues across the world. Weather manipulation has just as much potential to bring peace and prosperity to the world as it does to destroy it. The real question is whether human beings will use these findings for good or ill.
