WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY Dear year
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY Dear year 10 D&T group I hope that you all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend. Thank you to everyone who got in touch last week, it was great to hear from you and to know how things are going. If you didn’t get in touch please do it ASAP, I just need an update on how you are doing, good or bad! Thanks, Mr Morton
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY THIS WEEK’S WORK This week’s work is focussed on maths skills in D&T. This is because 15% of your GCSE exam will be based on maths in D&T questions (just like the year 10 exam). The exam board will not expect you to have any more maths skills than you have learned in maths lessons but you will need to be able to apply your skills to D&T situations. This week we will look at AREA and VOLUME which will be followed by some maths questions that you can try and check at home. The answers to each section are at the end – complete your answers first and then check!

WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA - Read through this information first Task one - Write up these formulae in your blue exercise book – remember to put a title ‘Maths in D&T’ and the date
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA – Example question and answer
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA – Example question Make sure that you include all units in your answers When you write up your answer write it out in FULL, showing all working out. This helps you structure your answer, it makes it clear to the examiner what you have done and it means you can get marks for the process even if the final answer isn’t correct.
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA – Now have a go at the following questions. Answer each one in full in the back of your exercise book. 1. A rectangle with sides of 450 mm and 200 mm needs to be cut to make a side panel for a machine. Calculate the area of the rectangle, using standard form. 2. Calculate the surface area of a cube where each side is 0. 6 m. 3. Calculate the area of the shape shown in Figure 1.
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA questions continued 4. A manufacturer has a rectangular sheet of steel that is 1. 2 m by 1. 4 m. This will be used to cut out four circles of radius 0. 3 m. Once the circles have been cut out the remaining material will be scrap a) Determine the area of one circle b) Calculate the percentage of material that will be scrap Now double check your answers before going to the next slide to mark your work
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA ANSWERS 1. Area of the rectangle 2. Area of the cube =Lx. W = 450 x 200 = 90000 mm² = 9 x 10⁴ mm² = 6 x L² = 6 x 0. 36 = 2. 16 m² (2 marks if you got this answer) (3 marks if you got this answer) (2 marks if you got this answer)
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA ANSWERS 3. The shape is made up of a semi-circle and a triangle Area of the semi-circle = π r² / 2 = 3. 14 x 0. 42 /2 = 0. 251 m² (1 mark if you just got this bit right) Area of the triangle = ½ (B x W) = ½ (0. 8 x 0. 6) = 0. 24 m² (1 mark if you just got this bit right) Total area = 0. 251 + 0. 24 = 0. 491 m 2 (4 marks for the full correct answer)
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY AREA ANSWERS 4. a) Area = π r² = 3. 14 x 0. 32 = 0. 2826 m² (1 mark if you got this bit) b) Area of the sheet = L x W = 1. 2 x 1. 4 m² = 1. 68 m² (1 mark if you got this bit) Total area of the 4 circles = 4 x 0. 2826 = 1. 1304 m² (1 mark if you got this bit) Waste % waste = 1. 68 – 1. 1304 = 0. 5496 m² = 0. 5496 / 1. 68 x 100 / 1 = 32. 71 % (5 marks for the full correct answer)

WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME – Now have a go at the following questions. Answer each one in full in the back of your exercise book. 1. Plastic granules are being stored in a vertical cylinder with the following internal dimensions: • diameter 500 mm • height 900 mm. a) Calculate the volume of material held in the cylinder, to 3 significant figures. b) The plastic granules are being used to make cubes where each side is 12 mm in length. Determine how many cubes can be made from one full cylinder of the plastic granules
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME – Questions continued 2. A manufacturer is making a toy hammer from solid plastic, figure 1. The hammer comprises a cuboid head and a cylindrical handle. The head is 60 mm by 80 mm by 40 mm. The handle has a radius of 10 mm and is 160 mm long. Calculate the volume of material needed to make 1 hammer.
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME – Questions continued 3. A manufacturer has 200 litres of plastic resin. This will be used to make products that each require 26 cm³ of the resin. Calculate the number of products that can be made.
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME – Questions continued 4. A company is melting a solid metal cylinder to make products by the casting process. The cylinder is 1 m in length, with a radius of 20 cm. a) Determine the volume of one cylinder b) A total of 90 products were made using the metal from the cylinder. Each product contained 1. 2 litres of the metal, but also created some waste metal. Calculate the percentage of waste metal created during the process. Now double check your answers before going to the next slide to mark your work
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME ANSWERS 1. a) radius = diameter / 2 = 600 / 2 = 300 mm Volume of the cylinder = π r² x L = 3. 14 x 2502 x 900 = 176625000 mm³ = 1. 77 x 108 mm³ b) Volume of one cube =Lx. Wx. H = 12 x 12 = 1728 mm³ (1 mark if you got this bit correct) (2 marks if you got this bit correct) (1 mark if you got this bit correct) Number of cubes that can be made = 1. 77 x 108 / 1728 = 102430 (4 marks if you got this full answer)
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME ANSWERS 2. Volume of the head = L x W x H = 60 x 80 x 40 = 192000 mm³ = 1. 92 x 105 mm³ Volume of the handle = π r² x L = 3. 14 x 102 x 160 = 50240 mm³ = 5. 024 x 104 mm³ (2 marks if you got this bit correct) Total volume = 1. 92 x 105 + 5. 024 x 104 = 2. 42 x 10⁵ mm³ (to 3 significant figures) (5 marks if you got this full answer)
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME ANSWERS 3. 200 litres = 200000 cm³ 200000/26 = 7692 products (1 mark if you got this bit correct) (3 marks if you got this full answer)
WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 18 TH MAY VOLUME ANSWERS 4. a) Volume of the cylinder = π r² x L = 3. 14 x 20² x 100 = 125600 cm 3 = 125. 6 litres b) Volume of metal used in products = 90 x 1. 2 = 108 litres (2 marks if you got this bit correct) Volume of waste % of waste = 125. 6 – 108 = 17. 6 litres = 17. 6 / 125. 6 x 100 / 1 = 14 % (1 mark if you got this bit correct) (6 marks if you got this full answer)
