Week 4 Year 3 – Character description This week in Year 3, we are learning how to write a character description and as part of this we will be focusing on the use of conjunctions. Conjunctions are words that link together other words, phrases or clauses. There are different types of conjunctions. Co-ordinating conjunctions join together main clauses. Main clauses express a full idea and make sense on their own. Subordinating conjunctions join a main clause to a subordinate clause – subordinate clauses are not a full idea and don’t make sense on their own. In this week’s activities, you will complete some reading practice and look at the features of the text. You will then learn all about how to use conjunctions in your writing. By the end of the week, you will write your very own character description. Why not write a character description of your favourite cartoon character?
Coordinating Conjunctions Coordinating conjunctions join main clauses and sentences. A main clause is a full idea and makes sense on its own. for and nor but or yet so My cat loves having his tummy tickled but he hates getting his claws trimmed.
What Is a Subordinating Conjunction? A subordinating conjunction is a word which still links two clauses together in a sentence, but the subordinate clause it adds does not make sense on its own. Let’s look at a few examples: although, as, before, if, I will be late if I don’t get on the next bus. once, though, until, whether, since, because, even though, before, Main Clause Subordinating Conjunction Subordinate Clause provided, after, whenever, once, so that ‘I will be late’ is the main clause. This clause makes sense on its own. The subordinating conjunction in this sentence is ‘if’. It starts the subordinate clause. ‘if I don’t get on the next bus’ is the subordinate clause. This doesn’t make sense on its own but does add extra information to the main clause.
