Assignment #2 • Develop 2 Visual Supports using Boardmaker • You will be expected to create 2 visual supports using pictures/symbols from the program, Boardmaker (assignment on Front Page of Wiki in the Course Outline and Description)

The visual supports should be suitable for use by an individual in a specific school, home or community situation. Some examples of situations are: üDuring calendar routine in a primary classroom. üDuring centre time in an elementary classroom. üWhen placing an order in a restaurant. üWhen choosing a leisure/recreational activity on a weekend. üEntering the classroom each morning üWashing a load of laundry. üYou may use the example situations, or make a board and visual support for use in situations of your choice.

Assignment con’t • In addition to the 2 visual supports, hand in: • A short description of the situations that the visual supports could be used in (1 -2 paragraphs), and • A brief summary of how/why you came to choose the pictures/symbols that you did (1 -2 paragraphs). (30% of course grade) • Due date: February 19, 2009

What is SET BC?

Mandate SET-BC is a Ministry of Education Provincial Resource Program established to assist school districts in educating students whose access to the curriculum is restricted primarily due to the following: • Physical disabilities • Visual impairments • Autism SET-BC • Lends assistive technologies (reading, writing & communication tools) to ensure students’ access to educational programs. • Assists school districts in training students & educators to use these technologies.

SET-BC Regions Provide direct services: • Serve 60 school districts, independent schools & provincial schools • Community-based services for school teams and students • Based in 7 regional centres & 12 satellite offices • Include regional consultants & inventory control clerks

SET-BC Students SET-BC supports: • 25 to 30% of students within mandate • 770 new requests for service in 2006 - 2007 • plus approximately 1800 ongoing students

Services for School Districts Key services • Consultation • Technology loan & support • Training • Resources SET-BC allocates services to school districts • Point system based on number of eligible students in district • Districts screen & prioritize students • Timelines - 3 cycles per year • Documentation & reporting • All services are provided in partnership with BC school districts. • District Partners play a key role in organizing services.
