WEEK 1 – LESSON 1 SEQUENCES
Lesson Objective To be able to recognise and extend number sequences.
When a number follows a pattern, we call this a sequence. For example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, …. What is happening to the numbers?
Each number is called a ‘term’ of the sequence. 2, 1 st Term 4, 6, 2 nd Term 3 rd Term 8, …. 4 th Term
We can generalise each sequence with a rule. 4, 7, 10, 13, …. The start number is: 4 The rule is: Add 3
What are the missing numbers in the following sequences.
If we know the rule and start number, we can write the sequence. The term-to-term rule is: Subtract 6 The start number is: 30 30, 24, 18, 12, ….
Write the first 4 terms of the sequence. The start number is: The term-to-term rule is: 4 Add 6 4, 10, 16, 22, …. The start number is: The term-to-term rule is: 4 Double it 4, 8, 16, 32, …. The start number is: The term-to-term rule is: 2 Half it 2, 1, 0. 5, 0. 25, …. 5 The start number is: The term-to-term rule is: Subtract 5 5, 0, -5, 10, ….
