A useful tool for parents and carers:
Are you aware of: ‘Sharenting’? Sharenting is when parents share information/ imagery of children (their own and others’) online.
Our Responsibilities: As part of the wider safeguarding duty, the Government stipulates that schools have a responsibility to “ensure children are taught about safeguarding, including online” (Keeping Children Safe in Education, September 2016). This requirement now forms part of the Ofsted inspection framework.
EYFS/ KS 1 Pupil Survey Findings • • • 53% of EYFS and 66% of KS 1 children go ‘online’ 42% of EYFS and 63% of KS 1 children play games on devices 12% KS 1 children have access to Facebook, 15% to Snapchat and/or Instagram, over 1/3 to You. Tube – the legal age is 16 for Whatsapp and 13 for the others Minecraft legal age is 13, however 36% of EYFS children and 42% of KS 1 children recognise and/or play this game Almost 1/5 of our KS 1 children said they had told someone their name, school or where they lived whilst online
KS 2 Pupil Survey Findings • Children were asked a range of questions about how and what they access online. • LKS 2 survey was undertaken as a class. • UKS 2 was more detailed, with each child completing their own survey. • UKS 2 children were asked to detail any negative experiences in order to give context.
LKS 2 Survey Headlines • • • Children are accessing the internet using a broad range of technology. Only 35. 84% of children said their parents/carers always monitor their internet use. A significant proportion of Yr 3 and 4 children report using social networking sites (Facebook 19%, Snapchat 23%). Only around 1/5 of children know how old you should be to have a Minecraft account. Many children state that they have had online experiences which upset or frightened them (23% have seen an image that made them uncomfortable and 28% have been sworn at).
UKS 2 Survey Headlines • The number of children using smartphones almost doubles to 65% by UKS 2. • Although 40% of children say their parents always monitor their internet use, many of those children also said that they use sites such as Facebook and Snapchat! • There is a marked increase in both the number of children accessing social networking sites and the range of sites being used. • Although most children who reported a problem said that they had been sworn at, there were some cases reported of “rude” pictures being sent and children being asked to divulge personal information to a stranger.
What are we doing as a school? - Staff From September 2016, two Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead positions were created in school, with specific responsibility to ensure that the teaching of E-safety is implemented and monitored across school. The DDSLs have already completed several training courses and are to become CEOP Ambassadors in February 2017. Teaching staff have received E-safety training and resources to support their teaching. We are working together to achieve the ‘E-Safety Quality Mark’ for our school
What are we doing as a school? – Parents In response to the parental survey undertaken earlier this year, we are endeavouring to share information and provide support in a variety of ways: • Through our website • Weekly newsletters • Sending magazine publications home • Being available at school events • Hosting parent information evenings • By being available to parents who would like a more personal discussion

Child-led Learning Key Stage 2 were invited to apply to become part of the Digital Leaders Programme. 12 Digital Leaders have been chosen and are beginning their initial online training course this week. These children will then help to plan and deliver: events, activities and training across school; providing peer to peer support and mentoring in online safety and cyberbullying.
The future of e-safety in School: We are committed to providing your children with a well rounded education and in today’s society e-safety will continue to be an important area of focus. We are continuously developing our e-safety programme and welcome your comments and the chance to discuss any questions you may have either now or at any time in the future.
